The Kitchen Layout

The fourth quick tip in this mini-series is weighing the pros and cons of the kitchen layout. 

The kitchen has many different elements to think about, so I may do a mini-series on the kitchen alone in the future.

In a modern farmhouse, the kitchen is not just a place for cooking–it’s a space where memories are made and families gather. 

As the hub of activity, the kitchen should be designed with both aesthetics and practicality in mind. From durable countertops to efficient storage solutions, every element in the kitchen should serve a purpose while still adding to the overall design aesthetic. 

The big takeaway here is to think about situations like the examples below BEFORE and DURING the design stage. Don’t settle for a kitchen someone else designed with their preferences in mind.

• Where will everything be stored? (literally, take the example kitchen that you have and think about where your plates, cups, bowls, beeswax wrap, excessive Tupperware, etc. will go before you give the final approval on the design)
• Do you want a window near the sink? 
• Do you want a center island for food prep? Or would you rather have a U-shaped kitchen?
  • If either, think about the distance from the food prep area to the sink, stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher and if this distance is ideal for your cooking style.
• Does the location of the dishwasher make for optimal loading and unloading? Ex. Is the dishwasher in the corner or in an area where it will be harder to put the dishes away?
• Are you opting for easy-to-clean surfaces?
• Will specific options look dirty/stain easily? (For example, a white kitchen sink looks gorgeous in my book, but it does stain if you don’t keep it on top of it).

So, the quick tip here is to think about how the kitchen functions when it’s in use because this will make or break your overall satisfaction with cooking in the kitchen.

Full House Functionality

The third quick tip in this mini-series is weighing the pros and cons of full-house functionality. 

What I mean by that is, how does the house function when you’re hosting gatherings or parties? 

Will people feel cramped in the space, or is there enough room to move? This may or may not affect you depending on your lifestyle. 

In addition to the space concern, you’ll also want to consider the main areas where guests stay (living room, kitchen, dining room) and if you would rather everyone be together in one central location or spread throughout the home.

This makes a crucial difference, because if you want everyone together, then opting for either one of these rooms to be large enough to fit everyone or designing your home with an open floor plan is your best bet.

If you’d rather people mingle in a more diverse space, then opting for some separation between the rooms like a hall or wall is your best bet. 

So, the quick tip here is to consider your lifestyle around hosting gatherings and how the home layout will influence how your guests feel at these events.

The second quick tip in this mini-series is weighing the pros and cons of potentially outdated home features and why you may want to avoid this potential trap.

When evaluating the design of your modern farmhouse home, it’s important to consider current trends and how they can potentially outdate your home down the road. 

Features such as popcorn ceilings, old light fixtures, and carpeting were once in style and, now, not so much. If you like these features then, by all means, you do you!

For those who want to save themselves from potentially renovating down the road, you need to ask yourself if the current trends are something you like or if it’s something that you’re following because it’s the norm.

Now, due to supply and demand, you may be limited in some design features. However, I challenge you to find the balance between what is “trendy” and what you like.

Some home trends going on now include:

• Farmhouse, Boho, and Modern Styles
• Color Pallet: neutrals and bold
• Arches in hallways or furniture
• Modern/Geometrical light fixtures
• The organic look
• Beadboard/ board and batten wall ideas

So, the quick tip is to challenge yourself and determine if the current trendy home features become outdated, will it bother you? or will you still enjoy those home features?

Try to view the current trends in the same light you would with the outdated home features mentioned at the beginning of this quick tip section of the blog!

The big questions you need to ask yourself are:

What type of items do you plan on storing?
