Katie T’s Farmhouse Home Fun Fact #25

Fun fact time! This is a new section I’m including on my blog posts so my readers can get to know me on a personal level!

So, for my 25th fun fact, I want to share that recently I’ve been getting into making bread!

Here’s the thing though. Anyone who says making bread is easy must have a superpower or they are lying (lol) because I’ve had countless failed attempts.

But it’s not all for nothing. It just means that I have an abundance of croutons and breadcrumbs from salvaging the unedible bread.

Farmhouse Master Bed Styling

The bed is the centerpiece of the room. So you’ll want to prioritize it because it will set the stage for the rest of the room.

There are several components including; the frame, comforter, extra pillows, throw blankets, and any additional accessories (if applicable). 

If you are on a budget, but looking to upgrade the bed frame, don’t worry! I have a tutorial here on how I upgraded my $25 Facebook marketplace bookshelf headboard into what it is today! If you decide to go in this direction, I also recommend getting this box spring so the mattress will sit lower on the bed. It’s affordable and super simple to set up!

The comforter is also a big priority in the bedroom, and if there were one thing I’d recommend spending money on, it would be the comforter.

Luckily for me, my husband and I received our comforter as a wedding gift! It’s honestly one of my favorites! I love the white and the design/texture of it. It’s such a gorgeous farmhouse comforter. 

Lastly, the pillows and throw blankets add to the overall appeal of the bed.

Don’t forget to incorporate texture and neutral colors into your master bed if they aren’t there already.

The idea is to add depth by including texture and cohesiveness with neutral colors. I have more information on how to apply the fundamentals of design to home decor here.

Farmhouse Night Stand and Lighting

Next, you’ll want optimal lighting in your master bedroom!

I found these vintage-esk lights on Facebook marketplace and gave them a little TLC with a new modern lampshade and spray paint!

I also got the nightstand from Facebook marketplace as well.

The idea of turning old into something captivating is the farmhouse style in itself. Unlike other types of decor elements like contemporary or modern where it’s based on newness, farmhouse prides itself on taking what’s old and turning it into something stylish. Hence the nightstands and candlestick lamps.

Cozy Reading Nook

The 3rd out of the 5 farmhouse master bedroom decor ideas is creating a cozy reading nook!

Ideally, a cozy chair with a side table to put a book, coffee or decorative elements is the way to go.

Again, don’t forget to add pillows for added depth. Straight lines can be a great way to capture your eyes and divert them to the next part of the room.

I also love to decorate with rocks that I find at the beach for an organic look.

This not only adds a touch of rustic charm, but it allows me to display those unique rocks that I find at the beach!

Farmhouse Picture Frames

Adding a large picture frame is another way to give your room that farmhouse look.

Curtains and Accessories

The last tip out of the 5 farmhouse master bedroom decor styling tips is to add rustic country curtains and accessories!

Again texture and neutrals are the way to go when picking out curtains.

I must have rearranged this corner SO many times because I either didn’t like what it was before or acquired new decorative elements, but the idea is to make it your own!

For example, I acquired this whiskey barrel as a wedding decoration from my grandmother. I also started growing this (I think it was an orange seed… either that or lemon!) into what it is today.

So, don’t forget to make your house a home and add personal elements.

No home should look like a display case at all times. Give your home some unique touches that reflect your lifestyle and personality.

First and foremost, the temperature of your home is key in creating a cozy atmosphere. This also varies from person to person because some people run on the warm side while others naturally feel colder.

But the key here is to create a warm temperature that’s not too warm. And, what I mean by that is you want the overall temperature to be warm, but cold enough (depending on the time of year) that you can wear a chunky sweater or curl up under a blanket and be comfortable. 

Depending on your living situation, heating or cooling is not always affordable. However, there are ways to achieve the perfect temperature and atmosphere without breaking the bank. 

For example, if you have a fireplace, lighting a fire in the colder months is a great way to add some heat to your home. The cracking of the fire will also provide its own unique coziness to add to the overall vibe. 

Embrace Natural Textures

To enhance the cozy atmosphere in your home, consider embracing natural textures. The incorporation of natural elements adds depth and character to your space, creating an environment that is inviting and comforting. By bringing the outdoors inside, you can infuse your home with a sense of tranquility that can instantly put you at ease.

One way to introduce natural textures is through the use of wood accents. To clarify, I’m not saying the item itself needs to be a warm color, but rather the undertone of the original color. 

For example, neutral colors lend themselves to a clean feeling at home. If you have neutral-colored throw pillows, curtains, blankets, etc. a warm undertone will create a sense of coziness compared to neutrals with cooler undertones. 

Create Cozy Nooks

One of the keys to creating cozy nooks is to think outside the box when it comes to furniture and decor. Consider creating a cozy reading nook by placing a comfortable chair near a window, and adding a small side table with a thrifted lamp for reading light. 

To create a cozy spot for relaxation, arrange a plush armchair and ottoman near a fireplace with a thrifted rug to define the space. Don’t forget to add some cozy pillows and blankets to enhance the comfort and warmth of these nooks.

Katie T’s Farmhouse Home Fun Fact #14

Fun fact time! This is a new section I’m including on my blog posts so my readers can get to know me on a personal level!

So, for my 14th fun fact, I want to share that my favorite food is watermelon!

Because watermelon is just a fruit I think it surprises most people, but I could eat watermelon every day of my life and not get sick of it.

I guess if I had to pick a meal, sushi is up there in the top 3. It’s tough to say with my taste pallet though because my favorite food varies with my mood.

Building on that, if you decide to create your own reading nook, you should consider getting a chair that fits the mood you are trying to achieve.

Adding in décor like a mirror or plant also helps set the cozy and simple vibe.

It’s a Cozy Alternative Sitting Area

I tend to have a routine throughout my day. In the evenings, I spend a lot of time in the living room and on my screened-in porch. Having a separate area away from areas like the Livingroom has been a blessing because it allows me to switch up the scene.

I get antsy when I spend all my free downtime in the same location of the house. Having a separate area allows me to divide up my time appropriately.

Alternatively, it helps to have an area where you can escape for the sake of slowing down. This fast-paced world makes it so hard to focus on the important things in life.

But, if you have a designated area for this purpose, it makes it easier to take those moments and pause for a bit.

Essential Decorating Techniques to Implement

The core fundamentals of design are emphasis, alignment/balance, contrast, repetition, movement, proportion, and white space. These fundamentals are the foundation of the 7 techniques I have shared below.

Escape the “Uniform” Look

You want your decorations to have a balanced feel without being uniform. The fundamentals of design apply to this technique.

For example, my built-in shelves have an array of different decorations. I’ve implemented the following techniques:

• Alignment/Balance: Some decorations are towards the front, others towards the back. 
• Proportion: The decorations are all sorts of shapes and sizes
• White Space: Especially near the larger items, there is space so the decorations are not overly crowded. Notice that some decorations have more white space than others to avoid the uniform look.

Whether it’s your kitchen shelves, built-ins, or even a flower arrangement, you want to space things out so they complement each other without looking uniform.

Stay with a Color Pallet

Sticking with a similar color pallet throughout the house is an important technique as well! Obviously, if you’re renting or aren’t in a position to renovate, then this technique might be a little tricker. But don’t worry because there are ways around it! For example, a throw rug is the perfect way to add a different color to the floor. 

My coffee station is an example of where I stay with the same color pallet. The whites and neutrals all work together for the feel of perfection. The fundamentals that I implemented here in relation to staying within the same color pallet are: 

• Emphasis: the color orange on the tea tin and caramel container pops out against the whites and neutrals. 
• Alignment/balance: all the colors work together and balance each other out.
• Contrast: the black farmhouse hardware against the white paint of the furniture.

Incorporate Textures

Textures are another technique when it comes to decorating. For example, I have added pillows and a rug to my screened-in porch to add texture.

In relation to this decorating technique, the top fundamentals of design I have implemented on my screened-in porch are: 

• Emphasis: the softness of the cushions emphasizes the desire to sit and enjoy the moment.
• Contrast: the rug and flag texture breaks up the surface to attract the eye to the change.

Odd Numbers are the Way to Go

Not always, but often decorating with odd numbers is the best way to go. You have to evaluate the situation, but typically speaking, if you decorate with an even amount of decorations, you run the risk of it being too balanced.

For example, the whiskey barrel in the master bedroom has 3 items on it. The odd number of decorations helps balance the whiskey barrel.

In relation to the odd numbers technique, my whiskey barrel exemplifies these fundamentals of design:

• Alignment/Balance: the barrel has 3 items to balance the overall appeal.
• Proportion: the plants and candle balance the large whiskey barrel.

Storage is Your Friend

Don’t forget about storage! Yes, this can be a decorating hack! For example, I recently refurbished my bookshelf headboard and added barn doors to give it the farmhouse look. This technique is one of my favorites because its functional while appealing to the visual sense.

It doesn’t have to be a huge closet, but even a small area where certain items have a designated space. This way, you can stay organized and minimize the quantity of stuff because it will exceed the storage space you have set aside. 

For my farmhouse headboard, I used:

• Alignment/Balance: the doors balance each other because they are on both sides.
• Proportion: the doors are the perfect size requirements for what we need.
• Movement: the hardware allows the door to slide, making the storage easy to get to.
• White Space: there are no barn doors in the center, allowing the middle storage section to cater to more decorations. 

Everyday Items can be Utilized

Yes, you better believe it! Everyday items can be used to decorate! Here is a sneak peek of my built-in kitchen shelves that I recently decorated. This is the perfect example of this decorating technique. 

The fundamentals of design I used for this technique are:

• Emphasis: the kitchen items stand out as opposed to the living room shelves I mentioned earlier. This makes it known that these shelves are in the kitchen (well, technically, it’s in the dining room, but you get the picture). 
• Repetition: again the kitchen/dining room items (for example the placemats) make it clear where this shelf belongs in a house.

Don’t Go Overboard

This sounds so simple, but it can be so easy to do!! I recently decorated my entryway bench for summer and this is the perfect example. You don’t want to go overboard with the decorations.

I could have added a larger bin for shoes or more plants in my entryway, but this is plenty.

The last fundamentals I showcase for this technique are:

• Emphasis: The primary item (the bench) is the main focal point. Everything else is extra.
• Alignment/Balance: there is a large plant and a small table on either side of the bench.

Bookshelf Décor Tips 

There are a few things to consider when you start the decorating process on your bookcase. I have grouped the big-ticket items into 7 different categories below.

Dimensions of the Bookcase

First, you’ll need to consider the width, height, and depth of your bookcase. How many shelves are there? Is there room for tall items? Or does the height of the bookshelf limit the size of the décor? Do you have side-by-side bookcases? 

All the above questions matter because these factors can limit you in different capacities. For example, my bookshelves have different heights between the shelves. The bottom shelf has the most space in between. 

Because the heights between my shelves are different, I have arranged the decorations methodically. For example, the copper bucket is on the bottom because it takes up the most height out of all my decorations. 

Also, if you have side-by-side bookcases, you’ll need to be mindful of the space. Personally, I would want to leave room between the decorations so it’s not crowded. However, if that is the look you’re going for, then go for it!

Color Pallet of the Bookshelf

Another tip to consider is the color of your bookshelf. Is it a neutral color? Or is it a painted bookshelf? Is it on the lighter side or the darker side? 

In my opinion, a bookshelf can never be too white. You can put white décor pieces on a white bookshelf and it’ll look pretty. 

Because the bookshelves in this house are so dark, I have to limit how many dark décor pieces I use. The goal here would be to brighten the bookshelves as much as possible. 

Decorating Style

Style is huge when it comes to how you decorate your bookshelves. Are you going for a modern look? What about the farmhouse, boho, contemporary, minimalistic, or vintage? Or perhaps a combination of a few. Whatever look you are going for, make it yours! 

In my example, I have some farmhouse and vintage pieces. The copper tea kettle and bucket lean more on the vintage side. The wood slabs, light holders, and picture frames are more farmhouse.

Decoration Seasonality

Another thing to consider when decorating your bookshelf is if seasonality will come into play. Are you looking for decorations that will last year-round? or do you like to switch it up? Personally, I like to add some seasonal decorations to switch the decorations up.

Function

How do you want your bookshelf to function? Is it just purely decoration? Or are there going to be functional items as well? For example, I LOVE wicker baskets, and I think adding these is a great way to store those little nick-nack items. 

For example, I have 3 wicker baskets in total on my shelves. One has a projector that we have for game/movie nights and an Aurora Borealis light. Another basket has a speaker, and the last basket has religious items like small figurines or rosaries. All are conveniently located and organized. 

Décor you Already Have on Hand

I am a huge advocate of using what you already have on hand. I mean don’t get me wrong, I love browsing Amazon or going to Marshalls and getting new decorations. But, there is something so satisfying about using that random fan that you didn’t know what to do with. The giddy realization that the fan perfectly balances the new copper bucket decoration. Take my word on this one. So satisfying.

Surroundings Around the Bookshelf

The last consideration out of the 7 bookshelf décor tips and tricks is what is surrounding the bookshelves. Is it a TV? Fireplace? Something else?

If you decide to go in this direction, I highly recommend adding a nonslip rug underneath. The plaid carpet is very slippery on its own. The last thing you want is your guests falling.

Add some plants to your entrance décor! Be mindful of the amount of sun that your porch gets as well. I bought this vine hydrangea because it can take the sun and shade, which is perfect for my home entryway.
