Katie T’s Farmhouse Home Fun Fact #16

Fun fact time! This is a new section I’m including on my blog posts so my readers can get to know me on a personal level!

So, for my 16th fun fact, I want to share that I want to travel more. 

My husband isn’t big on flying but is willing to go as long as it’s not a long plane ride (more than a few hours). 

So, if any of you have a must-try destination, preferably closer to the New England area, I’d love to hear it!

Elegant Draping Techniques: Factors to Consider

When considering these 5 chunky knit throw blanket styles and draping techniques, there are a few factors to keep in mind. 

The size and weight of the blanket should influence how it is draped, as larger and heavier blankets may require more strategic positioning to achieve the desired look. 

The idea is to have it complement the bed, not take over. So, if you have a large chunky knit blanket in comparison to your bed, this will determine what types of styling will look better. The same can be said if the blanket is on the smaller side. I will discuss this further in the examples below. 

Additionally, consider the texture and color of the blanket when draping it over your bed, as these elements can play a significant role in the overall aesthetic of your farmhouse master bedroom.

Another key factor to keep in mind is if you have throw pillows on the bed. The more throw pillows you have, the less space you have to fill with the throw blanket.

Finally, note that these examples are on one corner of the bed.

The corner you choose should be determined by external factors such as the shape of the room, or where the bed is in reference to the door.

In my case, the door is off-centered from the bed to the left (where most of these photos have been taken). I wanted the throw blanket to be a focal point, so I showcased these examples on the left side of the bed. 

The idea is, that when someone first enters the room, the blanket will capture their eye first and guide their vision to the rest of the room. 

By thoughtfully considering these factors, you can create a beautifully draped blanket that adds style and comfort to your space.

The Chunky Knitted Ball of Blanket

Smoothly transitioning, let’s now explore the creative possibilities of what I like to call the chunky knitted ball of blanket styling technique. 

When achieving a unique and cozy look for your farmhouse master bed, consider gathering your chunky knit throw blanket into a large, textured ball and placing it strategically at the foot of your bed. 

This ball-like arrangement adds a touch of whimsy and charm to your bedroom decor, creating a focal point that draws the eye in. 

This styling technique is geared more towards mid and smaller-sized blankets. I would consider my blanket to be mid-sized. It could be larger, but it could also be smaller.

If you have a larger knitted blanket, this styling option might not be the best for you. This is because the chunky knitted ball of a blanket might simply be too large and look too much for the space. 

The Decorative Fold

Now, let’s dive into another stylish draping technique with “The Decorative Fold.” 

For a sophisticated and elegant touch to your farmhouse master bed, consider elegantly folding your chunky knit throw blanket, but keep in mind that it’s a loose fold.

This technique adds a touch of refinement to your bedroom decor, creating a sense of luxury and comfort.

Once you place it on the bed, feel free to rearrange part of the blanket to give it the “controlled messy” look. 

Again, I’d recommend this style for mid to smaller-sized blankets. 

Depending on how large your blanket is in comparison to your bed, you might be able to get away with this styling technique with a larger chunky knit blanket. 

The “Throw” Blanket

To achieve a more relaxed and effortless look, try the “Throw” Blanket technique. 

This method is not to be overthinked.

Literally, take your blanket and throw it on the bed.

Viola, you now have a cozy semi-styled throw blanket with a hint of messy charm. 

Similar to the second example, this style is for mid to smaller blankets however, a large blanket may work. 

The Corner Drape

For a more elevated look, consider trying “The Corner Drape” technique, the 4th look out of the 5 chunky knit throw blanket styles.  

This styling method involves elegantly draping your chunky knit throw blanket over one corner of the farmhouse master bed, adding a touch of modern sophistication to your bedroom decor. 

Because this styling method takes up more space than the first three, I’d recommend it for mid to larger-sized blankets. 

Remember to add height when you drape the throw blanket over one of the corners. This will add depth and visual interest to your bed, so it doesn’t look flat. 

The Floor Duster Style

If you’re looking to create a cozy and relaxed atmosphere in your rustic farmhouse master bedroom, then “The Floor Duster Style” may be the perfect choice for you.

Katie T’s Farmhouse Home Fun Fact #25

Fun fact time! This is a new section I’m including on my blog posts so my readers can get to know me on a personal level!

So, for my 25th fun fact, I want to share that recently I’ve been getting into making bread!

Here’s the thing though. Anyone who says making bread is easy must have a superpower or they are lying (lol) because I’ve had countless failed attempts.

But it’s not all for nothing. It just means that I have an abundance of croutons and breadcrumbs from salvaging the unedible bread.

Farmhouse Master Bed Styling

The bed is the centerpiece of the room. So you’ll want to prioritize it because it will set the stage for the rest of the room.

There are several components including; the frame, comforter, extra pillows, throw blankets, and any additional accessories (if applicable). 

If you are on a budget, but looking to upgrade the bed frame, don’t worry! I have a tutorial here on how I upgraded my $25 Facebook marketplace bookshelf headboard into what it is today! If you decide to go in this direction, I also recommend getting this box spring so the mattress will sit lower on the bed. It’s affordable and super simple to set up!

The comforter is also a big priority in the bedroom, and if there were one thing I’d recommend spending money on, it would be the comforter.

Luckily for me, my husband and I received our comforter as a wedding gift! It’s honestly one of my favorites! I love the white and the design/texture of it. It’s such a gorgeous farmhouse comforter. 

Lastly, the pillows and throw blankets add to the overall appeal of the bed.

Don’t forget to incorporate texture and neutral colors into your master bed if they aren’t there already.

The idea is to add depth by including texture and cohesiveness with neutral colors. I have more information on how to apply the fundamentals of design to home decor here.

Farmhouse Night Stand and Lighting

Next, you’ll want optimal lighting in your master bedroom!

I found these vintage-esk lights on Facebook marketplace and gave them a little TLC with a new modern lampshade and spray paint!

I also got the nightstand from Facebook marketplace as well.

The idea of turning old into something captivating is the farmhouse style in itself. Unlike other types of decor elements like contemporary or modern where it’s based on newness, farmhouse prides itself on taking what’s old and turning it into something stylish. Hence the nightstands and candlestick lamps.

Cozy Reading Nook

The 3rd out of the 5 farmhouse master bedroom decor ideas is creating a cozy reading nook!

Ideally, a cozy chair with a side table to put a book, coffee or decorative elements is the way to go.

Again, don’t forget to add pillows for added depth. Straight lines can be a great way to capture your eyes and divert them to the next part of the room.

I also love to decorate with rocks that I find at the beach for an organic look.

This not only adds a touch of rustic charm, but it allows me to display those unique rocks that I find at the beach!

Farmhouse Picture Frames

Adding a large picture frame is another way to give your room that farmhouse look.

Curtains and Accessories

The last tip out of the 5 farmhouse master bedroom decor styling tips is to add rustic country curtains and accessories!

Again texture and neutrals are the way to go when picking out curtains.

I must have rearranged this corner SO many times because I either didn’t like what it was before or acquired new decorative elements, but the idea is to make it your own!

For example, I acquired this whiskey barrel as a wedding decoration from my grandmother. I also started growing this (I think it was an orange seed… either that or lemon!) into what it is today.

So, don’t forget to make your house a home and add personal elements.

No home should look like a display case at all times. Give your home some unique touches that reflect your lifestyle and personality.

The Creative DIY Headboard Makeover Idea for a Farmhouse Headboard

I love the farmhouse style, and as I said earlier, I wanted a farmhouse-styled headboard. The look of rustic barn doors is a must-have in my book. Plus, I’m an advocate of furniture having storage space, so it seemed like there was only one option; create a farmhouse bookshelf headboard!

Gather the Supplies

Here is a list of all the supplies I used throughout the process:

• Wood (I used scrap cabinet grade plywood and pallet plywood)
• Hardware
• Sander and Sandpaper
• Screws, Drill and Drill Bits
• Circular Saw
• Pencil
• Tape Measurer
• Wrench (for the hardware)
• Wood Glue
• Stain/Paint (I used gel stain, white and yellow acrylic paint, and mineral spirits)
• Paint Brush
• Matte Protective Top Coat
• Matte Board

Add onto the Foundation

The headboard I bought already had the bookshelf part, which is what I wanted. I added a piece of scrap wood to the top of the bookshelf so the farmhouse hardware would have enough room to slide across.

I also added some structural pieces to the bottom to make the headboard sturdier. After I completed that, I removed the back part because it had a hole and a crease down the center. I found a matte board similar in thickness and cut out the pieces according to size.

Finally, I cut out the pieces to make the barn doors and glued most of them down with wood glue. If you decide to do the barn doors, I cannot emphasize enough to make sure you have the right dimensions that fit according to your hardware. Whether considering the thickness of the door, length, width, height, and how the door will sit with the hardware, you need to make sure you consider all these factors.

Paint or Stain your Headboard

Once the headboard foundation is all set, you can paint or stain it! I didn’t add the backing to the headboard so it would be easier to paint. The same method applies to the middle section of the bard doors and hardware.

For this project, I used gel stain and mixed it with yellow and white acrylic paint. I did a similar process to a bookshelf (you can read about it here). I loved how the bookshelf came out, so I wanted to do a similar style.

When I did this project, I prioritized the areas that show because I was running out of the paint/stain mixture. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make more because I used all my yellow paint.

Once the first layer dried, I lightly brushed the gel stain in some areas. The goal was to get the stain to look like wood grain.

It looked too busy, with the dark contrast against the light. So, I made the same mixture that I did prior (I since got more yellow paint) and added mineral spirits to dilute it. I applied this over the whole top and rubbed it away with a cloth. This process worked out well, and I did it more in some areas than others to give the realistic wood look.

I’ll be honest the painting part did take a lot of trial and error, so don’t get discouraged at first. I think the final step of putting a coat of the mineral spirits mixture gave the headboard the look I was trying to achieve.

Once that was complete, I coated it with matte spray paint to give it a protective layer.

Add the Hardware

Now you can add the hardware to your headboard! In this process, I also added the backing to the headboard and the middle piece to both doors. Again, make sure you measure everything out before you drill any holes (lol did this one the hard way).

How to Spray Paint Lamps: The Easy Way

This project was incredibly easy. All you need is some painter’s tape, spray paint, and an area to work in. I used this spray paint because I LOVE the nozzle and how it comes out. It’s so easy to apply an even layer of spray paint. 

Remove the Shade and Clean the Lamp

First, you’ll want to remove the shade and lightbulb and clean the lamp itself. When I got this lamp, it was pretty dusty. I cleaned it as best as I could, but there was some dust that I could not remove. Perhaps it was unused for the longest time collecting dust, and now it’s part of the lamp.

Tape the Candlestick

Next, you’ll want to tape the candlestick. Start where the candlestick meets the edge where you want to spray paint. Wrap the tape around that edge.

After you wrap the tape around the whole candlestick, take the edge of something like your fingernail and make an indent where the candlestick meets the edge you want to spray paint.

Once the edge has a good indent, use your nail to flip the tape up. The image below is for reference. Now, you can tape the rest of the candlestick.

Spray Paint the Lamp

Next, you can spray paint the lamp! It’s really that easy!
