Why Choose Organic Beeswax?

By choosing organic beeswax for your candle making, you are not only creating unique works of art but also making a conscious decision to prioritize the well-being of both your household and the environment.

Most of the candles on store shelves contain toxic ingredients such as paraffin, acetone, and toluene, to name a few. When you burn one of these candles, it releases volatile organic compounds, including formaldehyde and benzene into the air.

These known carcinogens are classified as “safe” in candles because they supposedly only release small amounts of the VOC. But if you ask me, I’d rather take the alternative route and opt for a non-toxic alternative. Which means I’ll be making candles for myself!

The Benefits of Using Maple Syrup

In addition to the benefits of using organic beeswax for candle making, another interesting and natural ingredient that can enhance the scent of your candle is maple syrup. Not only is maple syrup a delicious sweetener for your pancakes, but it also adds a unique touch to your organic beeswax candles.

Organic Maple Syrup for DIY Project

I decided to experiment using maple syrup as a scent because I got this maple syrup candle for my birthday this year and I LOVE the smell! The sweet and warm scent creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere in my home, making it the perfect choice for creating a comforting and soothing ambiance. But, as I said earlier, I’m trying to switch to a non-toxic alternative, and I’m not sure what ingredients were used to create the original candle so I decided to see if I could recreate it!

Furthermore, maple syrup is something that I always have on hand, so I didn’t need to go out and buy specific essential oils to enhance the smell. I will, however, review how to add essential oils to your candle as an alternative or in addition to the maple syrup.

Step-by-Step Guide: Creating Organic Beeswax Candles

To begin, gather all the necessary materials: organic beeswax pellets, maple syrup, candle wicks, a double boiler (or two pots that fit into one another), and any desired candle molds or containers.

I used a container that had a candle in it prior, but if you don’t have one, get creative! Use a mason jar or a vintage glass container!

Next, you’ll want to melt the beeswax. Start by filling the bottom pot of your double boiler with water and placing it on the stove. Place the second pot on top of the bottom one.

Add the organic beeswax to the top pot and turn the heat to medium-low. Allow the wax to melt slowly.

While the beeswax is melting, prepare your candle molds or containers. Make sure they are clean and dry. Place a candle wick at the center of each container, ensuring it stands upright. Secure the wicks in place using a wick holder or by tying them to a skewer placed across the top of the container. Once a little bit of wax melts, you can add that to the bottom of the container to hold the wick in place.

Once the organic beeswax has melted completely, remove it from the heat and add in a small amount of maple syrup. The ratio of beeswax to syrup will depend on your desired scent and color intensity, so feel free to experiment. Stir the mixture gently and thoroughly to ensure the syrup is evenly distributed throughout the wax.

Next, carefully pour the beeswax and maple syrup mixture into your prepared molds or containers. Allow the candles to cool and solidify completely before moving them. Once the candles have fully hardened, trim the wicks to a suitable length, leaving about ¼ inch exposed.

Enhancing Your Organic Beeswax Candles with Essential Oils

Essential oils are highly concentrated extracts that carry the natural fragrance and therapeutic properties of the plants they are derived from. With a wide range of scents available, from soothing lavender to invigorating citrus, essential oils offer endless possibilities for enhancing the ambiance of your organic beeswax candles.

To incorporate essential oils into your candle-making process, you’ll need to follow the steps provided above. Then, instead of or in addition to the maple syrup, you can add a few drops of your chosen essential oil to the melted beeswax and maple syrup mixture, stirring gently to distribute the scent evenly throughout the mixture. Keep in mind that essential oils are potent, so a little goes a long way – start with just a few drops and add more if needed.

When choosing which essential oils to use, consider the mood or vibe you want to create with your candles. For a calming and relaxing atmosphere, lavender, chamomile, or ylang-ylang essential oils can work wonders. If you’re looking to uplift and energize, citrus oils like lemon, orange, or grapefruit can be refreshing choices. Experiment with different combinations to find your perfect blend.
