Katie T’s Farmhouse Home Fun Fact #1

Before I jump into the 5 surprisingly simple vintage farmhouse kitchen counter decor hacks, I want to mention a fun fact about myself! This is a new section I’m including on my blog posts so my readers can get to know me on a personal level! This is the FIRST post I’ve implemented this on so I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below.

So for my first fun fact, I’m going to let you in on the reason why I started this blog. And that was because I was actually fired from my prior job! It was a rough experience and time in my life and I don’t wish that on anyone. 

When I was job searching, I had this pit in my stomach that would not go away. I didn’t want to go back to the corporate world, let alone put myself in a similar situation where it felt like there was nothing I could do. 

So I decided to answer that little whisper that’s been calling me for quite some time, which was to start my own business. It’s been a roller coaster, but I have to say, it has been worth it! 

So, without further ado, let’s jump into the kitchen countertop decor hacks!

Create a Gallery with Vintage Artwork

Imagine a collection of old botanical illustrations or a vintage painting of fruits resting on the backsplash of the counter. The vintage artwork allows you to tailor the style and feel of the kitchen as a whole. 

This vintage fruit artwork was painted by my mother when she was younger. It’s been a focal point of the kitchen for as long as I can remember, even when my Memere and Pepere lived here. 

When selecting your vintage artwork, keep in mind the overall color palette of your kitchen.

Opt for art pieces that complement the existing decor and bring out the warmth and charm of your farmhouse style. Whether it’s muted earth tones or pops of vibrant colors, choose artwork that speaks to your taste and enhances the vintage ambiance.

Also, consider the size and shape of your vintage artwork. Aim for a balance in the arrangement, mixing larger and smaller cutting boards to achieve an aesthetically pleasing composition. You can also experiment with different frames and matting options to add depth and dimension to your display.

Repurpose Farmhouse Crates as Storage

Just like the vintage paintings, farmhouse wooden crates or boxes offer a versatile and charming solution for your kitchen counter decor.

These rustic crates not only add a touch of vintage allure to your space but also serve as functional storage pieces to keep your kitchen organized and clutter-free. 

With their weathered wood and worn-in look, farmhouse crates effortlessly blend with the rustic aesthetic of a vintage farmhouse kitchen. 

You can use them to store a variety of essentials, such as spices, cooking utensils, or even keys (like mine) if your kitchen is near the main entry door. 

The great thing about repurposing farmhouse crates is that you can easily find them at antique stores, flea markets, or even online marketplaces.

If you have multiple crates or boxes consider stacking them to create different heights and dimensions. You can also place them side by side to form a cohesive display.

Display a Collection of Vintage Kitchenware

Display a collection of vintage kitchenware to add character and charm to your space. Vintage kitchenware not only serves as functional tools in the kitchen but also as nostalgic reminders of the past. 

Whether you have inherited these items from previous generations or stumbled upon them in antique shops, displaying them on your kitchen counter adds a touch of history and authenticity to your vintage farmhouse aesthetic.

Consider arranging your collection of vintage kitchenware in a way that showcases their unique designs and craftsmanship.

For example, you can place a vintage mustard jar towards the front of your centerpiece, creating a visually pleasing display that also serves as a nod to the practicality and versatility of these timeless kitchen staples.

Clean and Take Apart Oil Lamp

First, you’ll want to clean the oil lamp. Then take the lamp apart by starting with the glass shade. It should easily slide off of the base. Next, you’ll need to unscrew the piece that holds the wick.

Once the antique lamp is apart, pour the oil into a separate container and clean the lamp base.

Sand the Vintage Lamp

For added adhesion, you can lightly sand the base after you clean the lamp. 

Paint the Old Lamp Base

Okay, here is the important part! Painting the oil lamp!

So, to get the textured look on my oil lamp, I added baking soda to the acrylic paint. I mixed brown and white together for the base. 

Take this opportunity to experiment with colors and textures with the paint. Just note that the paint will dry darker. Plus, the more baking soda you add, the thicker the paint will get. Start slow and add more as you go until you get the texture you’re looking for.

Once the first layer dried, I added a second layer of paint. I took the leftover brown paint that hadn’t been used and added white to some and black to the rest. I then layered these colors on the base of the lamp.

Once those layers were completely dried, I took gold spray paint and sprayed it into a disposable dish. The only reason why I chose spray paint was because it was the only metallic paint that I had on hand. If you like this layering and have metallic acrylic paint, that will also work.

So I took a brush and lightly brushed the gold paint perpendicular to the brush strokes to hit the high points on the oil lamp to give it that added sheen.
