Declutter and Simplify

Before you can get into any organizing, you’ll need to declutter and simplify the items in your home first. I find people fall into three categories on this one. 

You are the type of person who doesn’t hold onto much for the sake of not wanting any clutter around the house. Or you’re the type of person who holds onto a lot of stuff because it’s either sentimental or you find yourself thinking you might need it one day. Or, lastly, you’re the type of person who is in the middle ground. 

Now, the goal of creating an organized house is to fall into that middle ground area. If you find yourself in either the first or second categories and it works for you, then by all means you do you.

Home Organization Tips and Tricks to Get and Stay Organized

But if you want to be organized, you need stuff to organize and on the opposite extreme, you don’t want to be overwhelmed either. 

So how you want to declutter is completely up to you. This process does take time so be patient with yourself if it’s not coming along as fast as you’d like.

Cozy Sweaters for a cozy Home

The biggest tip I can give on decluttering is, to be honest with yourself and take the time to figure out if that item will be used or not. Perhaps ask yourself if there would be someone else who would benefit more if you donated that item (clothing for example is a big one). Also, ask yourself what has more value the item or the space that it’s taking up. 

Space is a HUGE game changer when it comes to staying organized. So while the item that you donate or throw out might have value, the space that it takes up might outweigh the significance of having that item. 

Create Storage Zones

Out of the 7 organization ideas for the home, this one is VERY effective if done right. So to organize your home effectively you’ll need to create storage zones. By designating specific areas for different types of items, you can easily keep everything in its place and maintain a sense of order throughout the house.

Now, this step is also crucial with decluttering. From my observations of other homes or even myself, what happens if storage is limited in a specific area. So because space is limited you have no choice but to put that item in an alternative space. Next thing you know you’re putting kitchen appliances in the laundry room because you have no other place to put them. 

Then years go on and you find yourself storing more kitchen stuff in the laundry room because that is what you’ve gotten used to. Meanwhile, there are probably so many areas in the kitchen that can be decluttered, allowing you to be specific and intentional about where you put everything. 

Learn How to Stay Organized at Home

So my biggest tip on creating storage zones is to be intentional about where you put stuff. Consider how the space functions on the day-to-day.  You’ll probably find that a lot of the stuff you have can be relocated to make more sense. 

For example, I’m sure most houses have a “junk drawer” with random charges, batteries, and who knows what else! If space is limited where you have that junk drawer located, your best bet is to prioritize the space and redistribute the items in that junk drawer throughout the home. This redistribution will be continued in the next step.

Use Stylish Containers

Storage containers are a HUGE must if you want to get organized!! This is because they can consolidate those random items that don’t have a home. For example, a nice wicker basket that can hold phone-related accessories can be neatly stored on a built-in bookshelf. It adds to the farmhouse charm and keeps those small items in their designated storage zone. 

In addition to their aesthetic appeal, stylish containers can also help maintain the organization you’ve worked so hard to achieve. With clear labeling or transparent bins, you can quickly locate and retrieve items without having to rummage through a filled cabinet or drawer.

Remember, the key is to choose containers that not only complement your home’s décor but also suit your storage needs. Think about the size of the container, its durability, and how it will fit into the space you have designated. By investing in stylish containers that align with your style, you can create a visually cohesive and organized home.

Label, Label, Label

Labeling is an essential step in organizing your home and maintaining order. It not only helps you find what you need quickly but also prevents items from being misplaced or forgotten in the depths of your storage spaces. Without clear labeling, even the most well-organized containers can become a source of frustration.

When it comes to labeling, there are several options to choose from, depending on your preference and the type of items you’re organizing.

One of the simplest and most cost-effective methods is using sticky labels or adhesive tags. These can be easily attached to the front or top of your containers, providing a clear visual cue of what’s inside.

If you prefer a more aesthetically pleasing option, consider investing in decorative labels or cutouts with a Cricut. These can be customized with different fonts, colors, and designs to match your style and complement your home decor. 

Utilize Vertical Space

When it comes to maximizing the efficiency of your living space, embracing the power of verticality can make a world of difference. By utilizing the walls and ceilings of your home, you’ll be amazed at how much extra storage and display space you can create.

One simple way to utilize vertical space is by installing shelves. Whether it’s floating shelves in the living room or wire shelves in the pantry, these versatile storage solutions can help you make the most of your walls. 

Use shelves to store books, baskets, and decorative items, or organize everyday essentials like spices, jars, or cleaning supplies. With shelves, you can turn empty wall space into functional storage areas, keeping your surfaces clutter-free and giving your home a more organized and spacious feel.

Another great way to take advantage of vertical space is by using hanging organizers or hooks. These can be especially useful in small spaces such as entryways, bathrooms, or closets, where every inch counts. 

In addition, you can also consider utilizing vertical space by installing overhead storage or using tall furniture pieces. Overhead storage can be especially helpful in garages or basements. Items like sports equipment, seasonal decorations, or luggage can be safely stored and easily accessed when needed.

Incorporate Everyday Items as Farmhouse Decor

Farmhouse decor is known for its rustic and nostalgic feel, with a focus on simplicity and reclaimed materials. By incorporating farmhouse elements into your organization solutions, you can create a cohesive and stylish look throughout your home.

One way to incorporate farmhouse decor into your organization is by using vintage crates or baskets as storage solutions. These can be placed on shelves, furniture pieces, or even hung on the wall to hold various items. The weathered appearance of crates and baskets adds a touch of character to any room. While also providing functional storage space.

Ladder Décor ideas for your Home

Another farmhouse-inspired organization idea is to repurpose old wooden ladders as shelving units. By simply propping a ladder up and attaching wooden planks across the rungs, you can create a unique storage solution. 

Lastly, the BIGGEST tip out of the 7 organization ideas for the home is utilizing everyday items as decor. 

Decorative Kitchen Shelves with Christmas Decor

This is a game changer when it comes to organization because it opens up the amount of storage space. For example, I used these extra farmhouse plates (given to us by my husband’s grandparents) as decorative pieces on our kitchen shelves.

Because I was able to display these plates, it opened up the cabinets that they were stored in for other kitchen-related items. So get creative and don’t be afraid to display or use household items decoratively!

Establish Daily Maintenance Habits in the Home

One of the most effective daily maintenance habits is to designate a specific time each day for tidying up. This can be a quick 15-minute sweep through your home. Focus on putting away items that may have been left out or clutter that has accumulated throughout the day. 

Another important daily maintenance habit is to clean as you go. This means taking a few extra seconds to put items back in their designated places after using them. 

For example, after cooking a meal, make it a habit to immediately put away ingredients, wash dishes, and wipe down countertops. By practicing this habit consistently, you can avoid unnecessary messes and keep your kitchen organized.

In addition, it’s essential to make decluttering a regular part of your daily routine. This can involve quickly sorting through mail each day and immediately recycling or discarding anything you don’t need. By regularly decluttering and getting rid of unnecessary items, you can prevent them from accumulating. This means they won’t be taking up valuable space in your home.

Choosing the Right Wood for the Charcuterie Board

Choosing the right wood for your charcuterie board is a vital step in ensuring its beauty and durability. The type of wood and shape you select can enhance the overall aesthetic of your platter and determine its functionality. 

I picked up this pine wooden round at Michaels, but you can also get similar ones on Amazon. They have a package deal or even wooden rounds with an edge. 

DIY Supplies to Make your own Charcuterie Board

Just note that applying the marble vinyl on a round edge is harder than a flat edge, so keep this in mind when picking your board. I will walk you through how I did it in the steps below. 

Also, consider the color and grain pattern of the wood when choosing which one to use. Each wood variety has unique characteristics and hardness. So, if you chose a maple or oak and stained it like I did on my pine charcuterie board, then the color will look different. So, again, keep this in mind. 

Food on a Board-Wood Crafts and Projects that Sell

Additionally, it’s important to choose food-safe wood. Avoid using wood that has been treated with chemicals or finishes that may be harmful when in contact with food. 

Gathering the Materials

Before you can transform a simple wooden board into a stunning charcuterie platter, you’ll need to gather the materials. 

A couple of things to note here. I will go into more detail in the section below on how I made the food-safe stain using cocoa powder, coffee, and wine. I also made the food-safe sealer using beeswax and butcherblock oil and will create a post and link it here. In the meantime, you can get similar sealers on Amazon. 

Charcuterie Board for DIYers and Crafters

I also want to disclaim that the vinyl itself doesn’t claim to be food-safe however, I used this vinyl on my counters several years ago, and I can’t imagine there would be any issues using it on the charcuterie board. I also plan on sealing the beeswax over it for an added layer, but proceed however you feel comfortable. 

Applying a Food-Safe Stain

Now that you have all the materials for the board, it’s time to take it to the next level by applying a food-safe stain. A food-safe stain not only enhances the natural beauty of the wood, but it’s easy and cheap to make!

There are many ways to make different variations of stain at home. I chose cocoa powder and coffee. I’m not entirely sure if the brand affects the coloration of the stain, but I used Nature’s Promise cocoa powder and Maxwell House ground coffee. 

Food Safe Stain for Crafting the Perfect Wood and Marble Serving Platter

First, I boiled water and, while that was getting up to temperature, added 1 1/2 mounding spoonfuls of cocoa powder and 3 mounding spoonfuls of coffee into a mason jar. Then I poured the water into the jar, covered it, and let it sit for 2 hours. I shook the jar every so often to get the grounds and cocoa to mix.

After the stain mixture sat long enough, I strained it. I put a folded cheesecloth over the top of another mason jar and poured the mixture through. 

DIY Charcuterie Board Crafting with Food Safe Stain

And now you’re ready to stain! Dip a rag into the stain mixture and stain your board. It’s not overly strong so it did take 6 coats for me. The good part is, you also don’t have to wear gloves because there are no harsh chemicals! 

Food Safe Stain with Cocoa and Coffee for a Wood and Marble Serving Platter

For an added bonus I’ll let you in on a little secret in this process. After the 6th coat (shown in the image above), I felt it was too heavy on the yellow undertones. To counterbalance it, I needed to find a food-safe stain that had purple hues.

It needed to be purple because purple is the opposite color of yellow. Applying the opposite color will offset the stronger color, yellow. So, after recalling the purple lips I get from Carlo Rossi wine, I decided to add 2 coats of wine to it. The wine gave it a purplish-redish tint. Not exactly what I wanted, but better than before!

Adding Stylish Marble Vinyl Accents

Marble vinyl accents not only add a touch of elegance to your serving platter but also provide a durable and easy-to-clean surface that is perfect for entertaining. Before applying the vinyl, make sure the stain has completely dried to avoid any smudging or smearing.

To create the marble effect, first, measure and cut the vinyl into the desired shape and size to fit your board. You can cover the entire surface or only have a strip down the middle like I did. 

Charcuterie Board DIY Craft for a Wood and Marble Look

Once the vinyl is cut, carefully peel off the backing and position it onto the stained wood. Start from one edge and work your way across, smoothing out any bubbles or wrinkles as you go. 

It’s recommended to use a credit card or a smoothing tool to ensure a clean and even application. Just don’t use anything sharp because it will scratch the edge. 

Cutting the Marble Vinyl for the Charcuterie Board Serving Platter

Now for the challenging part, cutting the edge. I used the edge of the board and ran scissors through the vinyl like cutting through wrapping paper.

Sealing the Serving Platter with Beeswax

As I mentioned above, I will eventually make a tutorial on how to make beeswax food save sealer from beeswax pellets and butcherblock oil. In the meantime, you can always get it on Amazon. 

To begin the sealing process, ensure that your serving platter is clean and dry. Any dirt or residue on the surface can interfere with the beeswax’s ability to adhere properly. 

Next, take a clean cloth or napkin, scrape the top of the sealer, and apply it to the board. The marble vinyl doesn’t need a ton as it doesn’t soak into the board like it does on the wood. 

DIY Craft for the Holidays

Once you have finished applying the beeswax, allow your serving platter to dry and cure for at least 24 hours. This curing time allows the beeswax to fully harden and bond with the wood. After 24 hours, gently buff the surface with a clean cloth to remove excess wax and reveal a smooth, lustrous finish. Just note that this sealer is water resistant, not waterproof. So you can wash it, just be sure to dry it right after to avoid any water sinking through the sealer.

By sealing your DIY charcuterie board with beeswax, you not only protect its natural beauty but ensure its durability and longevity. The beeswax acts as a barrier, shielding the wood from potential damage. Plus, it allows the board to handle water and oil from food or washing.

Dried citrus slices, such as oranges and lemons, are a popular choice for Christmas potpourri due to their vibrant colors and invigorating scent. You can easily dry your citrus slices by cutting them into thin rounds and placing them on a baking sheet. 

Bake them in a low oven (I did 225 degrees then increased to 275 halfway through) for 4 hours until they are fully dried and have a slightly leathery texture. Be sure to rotate the pan every hour and flip the slices over halfway through.

Another favorite fruit to include in your Christmas potpourri is cranberries or apples. Their deep red shade adds a pop of color to your blend, resembling the vibrant ornaments on a Christmas tree. To give some background, when I moved into the house that I’m living in today, I knew the main island in the kitchen was butcher block. At the time, I didn’t know how much I would fall in love with it.

But now that I’ve been here for 2 years and thinking about what I would like to include in my future kitchen, I have to say the butcher block countertops are a must. If you’re thinking about building a house or renovating your kitchen and trying to decide on what type of counters will complete your vision, consider the 5 reasons why I love my butcher block countertop.

You can Cut Right on the Butcher Block.

This is definitely the primary reason why I love this countertop. For someone who enjoys cooking, it’s so nice to have a large area to do all of the prep work with the convenience of being able to cut right on top.

I will say I have a separate cutting board for raw meat, for the sake of being sanitary, but most foods are perfectly fine to cut right on the board.

Butcher Block Gives your Home a Farmhouse look.

If you want to add some talking pieces to your home that give the farmhouse look, the butcher block is the way to go. When I go to other people’s homes, often they either have a laminate or some type of marble or granite counter. The butcher block is definitely a unique look, and whenever I have new guests over and they realize that I can cut right on the butcher block, they are instantly intrigued. 

Butcher Block Countertops are Not as Hard as Other Countertops.

Do you hate the feeling of putting a glass down on a marble or granite counter? I might be far and few, but I am not a fan of putting anything glass down on those types of counters in fear of it breaking. With that said, you don’t need to worry about that with the butcher block counters because it’s a softer material.

Now, a little disclaimer, butcher block countertops are more susceptible to getting scratches or marks from sharp knives, but the good thing is with a little elbow grease and sandpaper, you can sand it down.

Doesn’t Look Streaky when Cleaned.

Have you ever tried so hard to get your counters clean and it leaves a streaky look? I remember when I used to babysit for a couple, I’d clean their kitchen and whenever I cleaned their counters it left a streaky look.

Maybe I wasn’t using the right method to clean that type of counter, but you don’t have to worry about that at all with butcher block. The wood in the countertop absorbs any water, oil or cleaner so it gives a nice consistent look.

Relatively Inexpensive Countertop.

In comparison to other types of countertops, butcher block is one of the more affordable types. If you’re on a budget but want the luxury look that granite or marble provides, you can always mix and match the higher-end countertops with the butcher block, which will still look nice.

For example, the center island where most of the cooking prep takes place can be butcher block and the countertops on the outer edge can be marble, granite, etc. Or vice versa. Both options have the high potential to look wonderful in your kitchen.
