Because I ran into all those issues, I switched gears to plans B, C, D, etc., to work around the problems I was facing. Everything worked out because I ended up with a far better metal filing cabinet makeover than what I set out to do. So, let me share the tips and tricks I discovered along the way!

For my 38th fun fact, I want to share that I’m not a fan of pumpkin flavors. I wish I liked it more because it’s a favorite in the New England area during fall, but it’s just not my cup of tea.

Rustic Farmhouse Filing Cabinet Makeover for Your Home

So, to jump right into this rustic filing cabinet tutorial, you should understand why this cabinet makeover is so great.

The first reason is the worn look of the black metal. I anticipate that the paint on this product will chip and scratch with time.

A scratch on the flat and consistent paint would be noticeable. Because the appeal of this style is to look worn, the scratches that will come with time will only add to the charm.

The second reason is that I used vinyl floor planking on the face of the cabinet. The floor planking looks better than the contact paper vinyl. It’s also a LOT easier to install, which I will go into more depth about later in this post.

Note: if you plan on tackling a similar project, please read this entire article. Not only did I make plenty of mistakes getting the filing cabinet to look good, but there are things I would have done differently. So be sure to read all the tips and tricks carefully so you don’t face the same problems I did!

Be Methodical with Your Approach

This tip seems like a no-brainer, but when it comes to your rustic metal filing cabinet diy, it’s so true! 

My filing cabinet had recessed handles, so the whole face of the cabinet was flat except for that indentation. I decided that I could attach a plank of wood over it to give a farmhouse door look. I used wood from a leftover pallet to save money on this DIY project.

After I measured what I needed, I cut the pallet to the appropriate length. When I placed it on the face of the filing cabinet drawer, it looked terrible. I played around with it to see if I could make it look good, but the wood was too thick.

After wasting time and thinking about ways to use wood for this project, I decided to move on. I scrapped that idea and came up with what I thought was better.

Mistake #2: Vinyl Contact Paper

When I scrapped the wood pallet idea, I remembered I had some vinyl contact paper with a wooden pattern that would look great on the face of the drawers. At this point, I decided I would paint the rest of the cabinet matte black. I used this spray paint because it’s made for metal.

Originally, I was going to paint the base of the cabinet white for this rustic metal filing cabinet DIY because I am a sucker for the white look. But I decided that black would look better in this application. Especially comparing it to the original vinyl, the black just looked better.

Before you spray paint or apply anything, make sure you thoroughly clean your filing cabinet. I used dawn soap and scrubbed it down with this sponge. The green side of the sponge was perfect for scratching the original paint job. I wanted to sand the original paint so that the new paint could adhere to the metal better.

After I cleaned the cabinet, I spray-painted the base. I was not too worried about getting the coat even (as you can see from the hack job in the image). I knew I would be sanding it after, so if anything, the splotchy areas added to the worn look.

As the base of the metal filing cabinet was drying, I worked on the drawers. Because the drawers had recessed handles, I had to fill them, so the face of the drawer was flat.

Admittedly, I taped a roll of thick paper towels, and it worked. It had a slight bulge, but if you did not know it was there, you would not have been able to tell.

Next came the vinyl. I applied the vinyl to the face of the metal filing cabinet drawer. This step was the most frustrating part of the process. It would not stick, no matter how much I sanded the back side of the drawer to wrap the vinyl around. I used two different types of glue, including Loctite, but both were not working.

At this point, I decided that the glue might not be working because it needs pressure while drying. I tried clipping the area I was working on, but the clips kept sliding off because of the angle of the edges.

I finally decided to take masking tape and tape the edges.

Humorously, the tape was doing a good job adhering to the back side of the drawer. Because this area is visible only when you open the drawer, I decided to keep it.

I also added vinyl to the top of the metal filing cabinet because I liked the look of the wood. You will soon find out why I did not end up keeping it.

Do NOT Use Vinyl Contact Paper on Your Rustic Filing Cabinet

At this point in my rustic filing cabinet makeover journey, some time passed due to the weather. I wanted to work on this project outside, and my area was experiencing some snow, so I waited until warmer weather.

Once it became nice again, I found the time to finish the project. Unfortunately, I ran into some problems. The first problem was the vinyl developed air pockets underneath. I spread them out the best I could, but it was still noticeable.

After having experienced that, I can confidently say that I would not recommend vinyl contact paper on a metal filing cabinet. The air pockets could have developed because I left it outside on my screened-in porch. So, I do not know if the cold had something to do with it, but I would hate to put all the work in with the same results.

I decided to continue with the vinyl because I was in a crunch for time and wanted to finish this project soon, so I continued to work on it.

I removed the top vinyl piece because I prefer a worn look to the vinyl filled with air pockets.

I started to prepare the area for the drawer hardware. I bought this hardware for another project and had some leftovers, so it came in handy for this application.

I attempted to drill the hole towards the center of the drawer over the recessed handle. If you do this step, be sure you have the proper bits for your drill. I have this bit kit that includes bits meant for metal. I also recommend that you go slow when drilling into the metal.

As I drilled into the face of the drawer, I noticed it was not going in. I investigated and found I was drilling directly over the thick piece of metal for the recessed handle. It was too thick to continue.

Updating Rustic Filing Cabinet the Right Way

At this point in the project, I was so discouraged. The drill left a hole in the vinyl and a dent in the metal.

Even if I wanted to redo the vinyl on the whole drawer again, I would have to wait because I did not have enough left to do the face of the drawer.

At that moment, I decided that I would need to think of something else.

Then it came to me. I bought vinyl flooring planks a while ago for a different project that never happened. I hunted down the planking in a back closet and got to work.

I decided to keep the vinyl sheets on the face of the drawers because the floor planking seemed to adhere to it better than the straight metal. With that said, if you plan on giving your filing cabinet a similar makeover, I recommend buying glue proven to adhere to metal and putting this on the whole face of the drawer. Doing so will help the planking stick to the metal.

After I placed the planking down, I got the drill out again. This time, I planned on putting the hardware closer to the top of the drawer. I managed to do this rather quickly.

I would never move far away because I like being near family and friends. Plus, I love the 4 seasons (contrary to a lot of other people).

Importance of Upgrading your Decorative Ladder

The reason your decorative ladder is feeling cluttered is quite simple. As you can see in my decorative ladder, before upgrading it, it just felt overwhelming. 

It took me a while to decorate this because the decorations felt crowded even though there was enough space between everything. 

The Simple Secret to Upgrading your Decorative Ladder

So what is it then? Well, it’s the “big picture”. And what I mean by that is even though I don’t have an overwhelming amount of decorations on the decorative ladder, the visual appeal, as a whole, seems a bit much. 

So I had two options. Reduce the amount of décor or change something on the ladder.

As you can see, I went with the latter (see what I did there, lol!) and decided to upgrade the ladder and the display shelves. 

Now, in case you are wondering what the final decorated ladder looks like, you can check out my final post here! I’m not gonna lie, it came out so good!

So the question is, why does it look less cluttered? Because I removed one of the factors in the equation. The excess textures, in other words, the grain on the ladder. 

The ladder has a beautiful grain to it. However, this grain is visually overstimulating because there’s a lot of it. This overstimulation is driving the cluttered feeling.

It’s no different than decorating your home. Have you ever noticed decorating a room with excess features like textured walls, contrasting wood grain on the mantle, or even an intricate carpet pattern is more challenging compared to a simple room?

The same concept applies here too. There is too much fluctuation in the grain and the shelf coloring.

So, to make this easy for you, below are helpful tips and tricks to upgrade your décor ladder in a few simple steps.

Size of the Boards

So, first and foremost, do yourself a favor and don’t make the shelves too long. Before I ended up with these scrap pieces of shiplap I was using much longer boards.

They were far too large! As a result, I kept adding décor to fill the void, which only added to the busyness.

So, to make it easy for you, I wouldn’t have the display shelves any longer than the ladder height.

Now, there are some exceptions to this rule. But overall, if you’re striving for a similar look to mine, then apply this rule. My shelves are a few inches shorter than the ladder height, and I think it’s the perfect length.

I also got these shiplap boards for FREE! Thanks to my brother who is in the trades and comes across materials that are perfect for frugal DIYers like myself. I discuss more of how to get materials for free in the article above.

Stain the Top Shelf

I wanted there to be some original ladder showing. It doesn’t do me any good to paint the whole thing white when the point of getting a painter’s ladder was to showcase the painter’s ladder.

So, that meant one of the shelves needed some stain to match the color of the ladder. 

I go into more detail on color theory and how to use the knowledge and apply it to matching stains/paints in the article below. But for now, I’ll explain a high-level overview of how I did it for this project.

First, I took special walnut stain and diluted it with mineral spirits. If you do this, I highly recommend using a stain that you have used in the past. This way, you already have an idea of what to expect from the color.

Start on the safe side like underneath the shelf or on a scrap piece of the same type of wood. Use more mineral spirits to dilute the color of the stain. 

After the initial test, I gradually added more stain until the color came close. You can even add a different color stain to the mixture. Just be sure not to mix oil-based stains with water-based stains. I added briarsmoke to get the perfect grayish undertones.

Paint the Bottom of the Ladder

So, the last part of this upgrade is to paint the bottom section of the ladder. This was the big leap between the ladder décor looking far too extreme with the wood grain to what it is now.

And again, the point of painting it was to remove the equation of the overstimulation from the grain of the ladder.

A helpful tip to keep in mind is to use good masking tape.

Also, when you are looking to apply the masking tape, it’s easiest to get a long level measuring tool, or in my case, a makeshift one with a long straight edge and painter’s tape!

So, for my seventh fun fact, I want to share that I am also building my own home! 

Even if you’re not “ready” to build a home just yet, it’s never too early to start the process, and believe me with what I’m finding in my current situation, it’s easier to start the design process and get everything figured out sooner than later!

Before you dive into the exciting world of floor plans and architectural designs, it’s essential to have a clear understanding of your financial constraints and what elements of your home are non-negotiable.

Start by assessing your financial resources and establishing a realistic budget for your custom home project. Consider factors such as your income, savings, and any additional funds you may have available. 

It’s important to be honest with yourself about what you can comfortably afford. Remember, building a custom home involves not only construction costs but also expenses such as permits, landscaping, and furnishings.

The good news is there are ways to save money during the building process. Whether you DIY some of the building projects yourself, or save money on the materials and projects by finding an alternative resource, you have options.

One of the downsides to having our house structured the way it is, is the window right off of our porch is looking into our bedroom.

This is less than optimal, but perhaps we can get film lining for the windows to allow for more privacy.

Platforms like Pinterest offer a wealth of inspiration, showcasing stunning homes and interiors. Save images or create boards of designs, colors, materials, and layouts that catch your eye. This will help you gather a visual collection of elements you love and provide a reference point for your architect or designer.

Don’t limit your research to just images and visuals. Dive deeper into articles and blog posts that discuss different architectural styles, energy-efficient features, and innovative design solutions. 

Understanding the benefits and challenges of certain design choices will enable you to make more informed decisions and communicate effectively with your architect or designer.

For example, my brother, who works in the trades industry, said that one of the homes he was working on had an issue with one of the kitchen appliances. 

Ultimately it was a breakdown in communication, and the issue at hand was the space in the kitchen didn’t account for the dimensions of this particular kitchen appliance. If my memory is correct, I think it was the refrigerator. 

The homeowner had to adjust, but had the dimensions of this particular appliance been thought of and discussed ahead of time, it wouldn’t have been an issue. 

Discussions with Professionals in the Field

I am fortunate to have a plethora of family in the trades. Whether it’s construction, electrical, plumbing, etc., having these connections has helped and continues to help during the designing stages. 

Because don’t forget, they see a lot of homes or helped build them. So, if you have any close family or friends in a specific field that applies to building a home, definitely utilize that resource.

Now, remember, just because they may have their preferences doesn’t mean that same preference applies to you. We all have different lifestyles/needs and wants, so don’t feel obligated to act on every suggestion but rather listen and digest their advice.

Understanding Color Theory

To truly master the art of wood stain color matching, it’s essential to have a firm grasp of color theory. By understanding how different colors interact and influence one another, you can create harmonious blends that breathe life into your woodworking projects. 

So, to elaborate, I used the knowledge of color theory to match the color of my nightstands to the color of my bed frame. Keep in mind, that I used completely separate paints and stains for both of them. For the bed frame, I mixed walnut gel stain with yellow acrylic paint. And I added briarsmoke to a preexisting coat of aged wood accelerator on the nightstands.

At its core, color theory explores the relationships between colors on the color wheel. This invaluable tool categorizes colors into primary (red, blue, and yellow), secondary (created by mixing primary colors), and tertiary (mixtures of primary and secondary colors) hues. By familiarizing yourself with this basic framework, you can begin to understand how hues combine and interact to create unique shades.

One of the fundamental concepts in color theory is the idea of complementary colors. These colors sit opposite each other on the color wheel and create a striking contrast when paired together. For example, red and green or blue and orange are complementary pairs. 

Understanding how complementary colors affect wood stain color is key. This is because when complementary colors mix, they create a shade of brown. 

This is why kids who mix lots of paints or dyes for their craft projects end up with a brown color. For example, they mixed red, yellow, and blue. Yellow and blue mix together and create green, the complementary color of red. So when those two mix, they form brown. 

Another key aspect to consider is the ratio of the colors. So, building off of the example above, if the kid mixed equal parts red, yellow, and blue (the primary colors), then the outcome wouldn’t be brown but rather black. This is a lot harder to do, but when considering shades for staining, you must keep this in mind.

Choosing the Right Stains

So, what do complementary colors have to do with blending stains to match a preexisting color? Everything. Because odds are, unless you know the exact color used on the preexisting furniture, you’ll have to mix some stain to get it close.

The complementary colors come into play because this knowledge will help you determine what colors to mix. Take, for example, this DIY coffee station project I did earlier this year. 

I used gel stain on the top of the furniture piece and did not care for the purple undertones. Now, the complementary color of purple is yellow, so I decided to experiment and mix yellow acrylic paint with the stain. 

Did I get the desired color? Yes! The yellow offset the purple undertones because it was the complementary color. Now, I would not mix acrylic paint with regular stain. The only reason I decided to experiment with the gel stain is because of the nature of how gel stain works. You can find more information here on the benefits of gel stain over traditional stain and how to use it.

But this concept still applies. Let’s say you found a stain close to a preexisting color, but the purple undertone is slightly too strong (shown in the example above when I mixed white with the brown stain). If you mix a stain with yellow undertones, it will balance out the purple (the brown to the right of the purplish undertoned brown).

You may also need to experiment with shades and how much of each ratio, but that varies depending on your unique circumstances. So in the example of the nightstands above, this was the original color:

After I DIYed my farmhouse bed frame, I decided I wanted my nightstands to match. After having experience with the briarsmoke stain and knowing it has a gray-purplish tint, I decided to test it out and it couldn’t be more spot on!

Blending Stain Colors

Immersing ourselves in the principles of color theory opens up a vast array of possibilities in wood stain color matching. With this knowledge, we gain the confidence to select the perfect stains that not only complement each other but also bring out the best in the wood. 

Blending stain colors allows us to create unique and custom shades that perfectly suit our preferences and the project at hand. Whether we want to achieve a warm, honey-like tone or a rich, mahogany hue, blending stain colors gives us the freedom to experiment and create our desired look. 

To begin the process of blending stain colors, we can start by selecting a primary stain color as our base. This color will serve as the foundation for our blend. From there, we can add small amounts of other stain colors to the base, testing the mixture on a piece of scrap wood to determine the desired outcome. 

Just note that the type of scrap wood will influence the shade. So you can always test directly on the furniture as I did for this project and sand it off after. Or you can apply the stain in a hidden area, like the bottom of the furniture. 

I also want to point out that the types of stains will determine the stains you can mix with. You should only mix oil-based stains with other oil-based stains. The same rule applies to water-based stains as well. 

The key to successful blending is to start with small increments and gradually build up the intensity of the added colors. This gradual approach allows for greater control and precision in achieving the desired shade. Remember, it’s always easier to add more color than to remove it, so take your time and experiment until you find the perfect blend.

Applying Stains Like a Pro

Once you achieve the desired stain color, you can apply the blended stain to your project. 

1. Prepare the Wood Surface: Before applying any stain, it’s crucial to prepare the wood surface properly. Start by sanding the wood to remove any imperfections or previous finishes. This will help the stain adhere evenly and create a uniform look. Ensure that the wood is clean and free from dust or debris, as these can affect the final result.

2. Use the Right Tools: To achieve a professional-looking finish, it’s essential to use the right tools for applying the stain. Consider using a high-quality brush, foam applicator, or cloth, depending on the type of stain and desired finish.

3. Apply in the Right Conditions: The environment in which you apply the stain can significantly impact the final result. Ideally, choose a well-ventilated area with moderate temperature and low humidity. Avoid applying the stain in direct sunlight or extreme weather conditions, as these can affect how the stain dries and adheres to the wood.

4. Follow the Directions: Different stains may have specific instructions or recommended application techniques. Read the manufacturer’s guidelines carefully before starting and follow them accordingly. Some stains may require multiple coats, while others might need to be wiped off within a certain timeframe. By following the instructions, you can achieve the best outcomes with your blended stain.

DIY Desk Refurbished 

As I said before, I’ve had this desk for a while. I got it free from Facebook Marketplace and knew it would need some TLC. I finally found time to tackle this project, and am sharing what I did for those looking to refurbish their home office desk. 

Evaluate the Situation

Okay, so one of the first things I did was take apart the whole desk. I didn’t completely take apart the top, because I knew I wouldn’t be using it, at least not for what it was built for.

So, I scraped the top piece for parts to add to the base of the desk. For example, the desk was missing some trim, and there was an open space between the drawer and the cabinet below.

So, I took pieces, like trim from the top part of the desk, cut them to size, and attached them to where I felt necessary. 

I always like to use what I have on hand to complete a project. But, I understand this might not apply to you because your desk is probably different. If that’s the case, get creative! Perhaps you can find free furniture for designated scrap wood to use on other projects!

Sand the Desk

So my desk is made of particle board with a laminate covering. I still sanded the desk lightly, just so the paint would adhere better. If you also have a laminate desk, don’t go overboard on the sanding, as this will destroy the laminate finish. You want to sand just enough so the paint has something to adhere to.

Paint the Office Desk

Okay, so here is where I skipped a step, and I highly recommend that you don’t. And what I mean is I never put down a primer. Now, having had my desk completed and moved back into the office, it did chip slightly during the moving process. I wish I had put primer down as a base layer so the paint would have adhered better, but unfortunately, I skipped that step.

So don’t make the same mistake! Take the time and put the primer down first, and then paint the desk with the color of your choice!

As I said earlier, I’m a huge fan of using what I have to tackle a project. I had white matte outdoor paint that hadn’t been unused for a long time. I also had a water-based stain left over from a different project. 

So, I mixed the two! Yes, I mixed paint and stain together, and I have to be honest, I’m in love with the color. If you decide to do this step, just make sure that the paint and stain are the same base, whether it’s water or oil. 

I also used a paint roller and sponge to paint the desk. I feel like I get a much smoother layer with a paint roller vs. a brush. 

Final Coating on the Desk

After 3 layers of paint, I added the final coating of polycrylic to give it a finishing protective coat. Again, I painted this with a paint roller so I wouldn’t have brush strokes. 

Spray Paint the Hardware

So I bought these gorgeous drawer handles (I’m seriously so happy with how they match the desk), and I wanted the metal hardware like the drawer slides to match the handles. So I spray-painted them gold, to give it a matching color. 

Assemble the Desk 

After everything is painted and has dried, you can assemble it! And voila, there you have it! A new and improved desk for your home office!

Understanding Gel Stain – What It Is and How It Works

To achieve a stunning furniture transformation, you may want to try the incredible power of gel stain. But what exactly is gel stain, and how does it work? Well, let me tell you.

At its core, gel stain is a thick, pigmented solution specifically designed for nonporous surfaces to give a wood-like texture. Unlike traditional liquid stains, gel stain has a semi-solid consistency that sits on top of the surface rather than penetrating it deeply. This unique property makes gel stain an ideal choice for transforming furniture, as it can easily cover up imperfections and create a textured, professional finish.

One of the major advantages of gel stain is its versatility. You can apply it on many surfaces, including painted wood, laminate, veneer, and primed metal. Whether you’re working on a solid wood bookshelf or revamping a worn-out headboard, gel stain can do wonders.

The image below is an example of the finished outcome of my DIY headboard project. I transformed the original laminate bookcase headboard into what it is today.

The application process of gel stain is also straightforward and beginner-friendly. Because it sits on the surface rather than soaking in, you don’t need to worry about applying it perfectly in one go. First and foremost, sanding is a critical step in preparing your furniture for typical staining. However, one of the benefits of gel stain is you don’t necessarily need to do this step. However, with that said, I still recommend doing at least a light sanding to smooth out rough surfaces.

After lightly sanding, it’s crucial to thoroughly clean your furniture to remove any dust, dirt, or debris. A clean surface will ensure proper adhesion of the gel stain and prevent any unwanted particles from marring the final finish. 

Once your furniture is clean and dry, it’s time to assess and address any necessary repairs. Inspect the piece for cracks, dents, or other damages that may need fixing before applying the gel stain. 

Use wood filler or putty to repair any imperfections, making sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper application and drying time. Sand the repaired areas lightly to blend them with the rest of the furniture surface. Taking the time to repair any damages will ensure that your finished piece looks professionally done.

Applying Gel Stain – What You Need to Know

Next, you’re ready to transform furniture with gel stain. But, before you start there are a few things to note. 

First, one of the benefits of gel stain is that it dries faster than traditional stain. This can also be a double-edged sword if you don’t move quickly during the staining process. 

Think of it like nail polish. Imagine painting all of your nails and allowing them time to dry. You accidentally brush up against one of them and ruin the nail polish. Trying to fix it while it’s slightly dry is similar to the consistency you’ll face if you take too long to apply the gel stain. This is why working in small areas is the best approach. 

The base color and texture of the gel stain are also super important. I made this mistake the hard way on my DIY bookcase upgrade. The base color and texture were white and flat which did not allow the gel stain to have the impact I wanted it to.

When I applied the gel stain directly to the white matte paint, I did not like the outcome for a few reasons. The first was the effect the layering had on the colors. I go into more detail about color theory here for my bookshelf DIY guide and how to avoid the unwanted undertones of the stain, but long story short, I was not a fan of the color effect that the gel stain had when put directly on the white. 

The next issue was the texture. I see other sources recommending using a foam roller for the base coat, but I would not recommend this unless there is already a preexisting texture like in a fiberglass door. I say this because the whole point of gel stain is to get a wood-like texture, even if it’s not actual wood. By using a paint roller for a base coat on an already smooth surface, you’re taking away from the texture of the final product. 

Applying Gel Stain -Step-by-Step Instructions for a Professional Finish

Now you are ready to transform furniture with gel stain! As mentioned before, start in a small area and work your way throughout the piece. Also, don’t be afraid to experiment a little. 

In the example below, I used gel stain for the knots and grain of the wood. Because the consistency of the gel stain is thicker, it makes it easier to achieve this look in a believable sense. I go into more detail here on how I refurbished my headboard for those looking to implement a similar look. 

But, for a high-level overview of the steps to achieve this look, lightly dip the bristles in the gel stain (you don’t want too much on the bristles). Then slightly twist your wrist in the direction of the grain while lightly brushing the surface with the brush. 

Also, take advantage of layering and going back over the section with a cloth to smudge the stain. Then, repeat the same process above to enhance the depth of color.

Another big takeaway to make the furniture look as realistic as possible is not to make the strokes too uniform. In general, I feel like I struggle with this one, so if you are too, don’t worry you’re not alone! But don’t be afraid to make the grain bigger in one section and smaller in the next. It’s all about creating balance with unequal brush strokes. 

Mixing Gel Stain with Paint – Unlocking Creative Options

For a spin on how to transform furniture with gel stain, you can also mix gel stain with paint. This allows you to create a wide range of colors and effects, giving your furniture a unique and personalized look. Whether you want to add a subtle tint or create a bold statement piece, this technique opens up a new world of creative options.

To begin, select a paint color. In the example below, I decided to add yellow to the gel stain, and I explain the color theory behind that decision here.

To choose a color, consider the overall look you want to achieve – do you prefer a monochromatic scheme or a contrasting color combination? Experimenting with different color combinations can yield surprising and beautiful results.

Start by mixing a small amount of paint with the gel stain. The ratio of gel stain to paint will depend on the desired intensity of the color and overall thickness. The more paint, the thinner the mixture gets.

Before applying the mixture to your furniture, test it on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure that you’re happy with the color and consistency. 

Once you’re satisfied with the mixture, apply it to your furniture using a brush, following the techniques outlined earlier. Take your time and work in small, manageable sections, ensuring a smooth and even application.

Enhancing the Look – Adding Additional Finishes and Techniques

Once you have achieved a professional finish with gel stain, you may find yourself wanting to take your furniture transformation to the next level. This is where adding additional finishes and techniques can truly enhance the look of your piece.

One popular technique is distressing, which gives furniture a worn and weathered appearance. You can create a charming vintage effect by strategically sanding or scraping away layers of paint or stain in areas that would naturally experience wear and tear over time. This technique works particularly well on pieces with ornate details or intricate carvings, as it can accentuate their beauty and bring out the depth of their design.

Another option for enhancing the look of your furniture is to experiment with different top coats. While gel stain alone provides a durable finish, applying a clear coat or wax can further protect the surface and add a subtle sheen.

The Creative DIY Headboard Makeover Idea for a Farmhouse Headboard

I love the farmhouse style, and as I said earlier, I wanted a farmhouse-styled headboard. The look of rustic barn doors is a must-have in my book. Plus, I’m an advocate of furniture having storage space, so it seemed like there was only one option; create a farmhouse bookshelf headboard!

Gather the Supplies

Here is a list of all the supplies I used throughout the process:

• Wood (I used scrap cabinet grade plywood and pallet plywood)
• Hardware
• Sander and Sandpaper
• Screws, Drill and Drill Bits
• Circular Saw
• Pencil
• Tape Measurer
• Wrench (for the hardware)
• Wood Glue
• Stain/Paint (I used gel stain, white and yellow acrylic paint, and mineral spirits)
• Paint Brush
• Matte Protective Top Coat
• Matte Board

Add onto the Foundation

The headboard I bought already had the bookshelf part, which is what I wanted. I added a piece of scrap wood to the top of the bookshelf so the farmhouse hardware would have enough room to slide across.

I also added some structural pieces to the bottom to make the headboard sturdier. After I completed that, I removed the back part because it had a hole and a crease down the center. I found a matte board similar in thickness and cut out the pieces according to size.

Finally, I cut out the pieces to make the barn doors and glued most of them down with wood glue. If you decide to do the barn doors, I cannot emphasize enough to make sure you have the right dimensions that fit according to your hardware. Whether considering the thickness of the door, length, width, height, and how the door will sit with the hardware, you need to make sure you consider all these factors.

Paint or Stain your Headboard

Once the headboard foundation is all set, you can paint or stain it! I didn’t add the backing to the headboard so it would be easier to paint. The same method applies to the middle section of the bard doors and hardware.

For this project, I used gel stain and mixed it with yellow and white acrylic paint. I did a similar process to a bookshelf (you can read about it here). I loved how the bookshelf came out, so I wanted to do a similar style.

When I did this project, I prioritized the areas that show because I was running out of the paint/stain mixture. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make more because I used all my yellow paint.

Once the first layer dried, I lightly brushed the gel stain in some areas. The goal was to get the stain to look like wood grain.

It looked too busy, with the dark contrast against the light. So, I made the same mixture that I did prior (I since got more yellow paint) and added mineral spirits to dilute it. I applied this over the whole top and rubbed it away with a cloth. This process worked out well, and I did it more in some areas than others to give the realistic wood look.

I’ll be honest the painting part did take a lot of trial and error, so don’t get discouraged at first. I think the final step of putting a coat of the mineral spirits mixture gave the headboard the look I was trying to achieve.

Once that was complete, I coated it with matte spray paint to give it a protective layer.

Add the Hardware

Now you can add the hardware to your headboard! In this process, I also added the backing to the headboard and the middle piece to both doors. Again, make sure you measure everything out before you drill any holes (lol did this one the hard way).

Clean and Take the Side Table Apart

Before you start with the paint/stain stripper, sanding, or staining, you’ll want to clean your end table with a cloth and hot water. After it’s clean, you can disassemble the piece.

Apply the Stain Stripper to your Side Table

Next, you’ll want to apply the stain stripper. I considered Citristrip, but after doing a little research and watching a side-by-side comparison, Citristrip made the furniture blotchy, which was not the look I wanted.

I want to emphasize that this stain stripper is no joke. The instructions specify pouring some into a metal container and applying it to the furniture. I didn’t take the metal container part seriously. I figured a plastic cup would be sufficient because it said to use a plastic putty knife.

Well, to my surprise, the stain stripper started eating away at the plastic cup in a matter of seconds. The image below is a photo of a couple of minutes in. Keep in mind the stain stripper is supposed to be clear.

So don’t do what I did. If you pour the stripper into a separate container, make sure it’s metal. And wear gloves too!

Also, don’t be afraid of putting a thick layer on. I kept on reapplying because the layer I did was too thin. When I work on my coffee table for the next furniture piece, I’ll apply a thicker layer.

Remove the Stain Stripper

The instructions specify using a plastic putty knife to scrape the stain stripper off. After what happened to the plastic cup, I decided to use a metal putty knife instead. Assuming that they specified plastic so the furniture wouldn’t scratch, I sanded the edges of the metal putty knife so that wouldn’t happen.

For the sides of the table, I used the coarse side of a sponge to remove the stain stripper. I dipped the sponge in mineral spirits and scrubbed the side of the table in a circular motion.

If you need to, you might have to apply another coat of the stain stripper. As I said before, I didn’t apply enough the first time, so I had to do another coat even after I scraped most of it off.

Once I removed the stain stripper, I wiped the whole piece down with mineral spirits.

Sand the End Table

After the end table dried completely, I lightly sanded it to remove any leftover stain. This step is as needed, as there were some areas where the stain was deeply set into the end table.

I’m curious to see if my coffee table has a similar problem because they are a matching set, but I got both on Facebook Marketplace at different times from different people (I know, imagine that luck!)

Give your Table a Farmhouse Colored Stain

I love the farmhouse look and when I build my house, I want it to be that style. This end table will go into the living room, so I want to give it that farmhouse feel. I think the stains that have cooler undertones are what make it farmhouse-y.

My vision for this end table was a lighter brown with gray undertones. I experimented with the stains to get a feel for what I wanted. The image below shows the colors that I considered.

1. Special Walnut
2. Special Walnut with Briarsmoke topcoat
3. Briarsmoke with Special Walnut topcoat
4. Briarsmoke

I ended up going with 2! Special Walnut as the base coat and Briarsmoke as the topcoat. After the stain completely dried, I added a protective coat to it.

Spray Paint the Hardware.

I used this spray paint, and I must say, the nozzle is something to rave about! I will be using this brand again, no doubt.

After I spray-painted the legs and hardware, I added a sealer to protect the bottom coat.

Assemble the Pieces

After everything has completely dried, you can assemble it!

Transform Your Bookshelf with This DIY Makeover

My husband and I had this bookcase hiding in our closet for the longest time! Recently, I repurposed a metal filing cabinet (you can read about it here), enabling me to move some paperwork around.

Because the metal filing cabinet is now holding our paperwork, it freed up some space in my desk. I decided to move the books into the desk and repurpose the bookcase.

My goal for repurposing this bookshelf is to turn it into a coffee station! I am hands down, a coffee snob. With my personality type, it is fitting to have a designated coffee station.

Materials

• Spackle
• Wood Glue
• White matte paint
• Paint Roller and Paint Brush
• Sander and Sandpaper
• Circular saw
• Scrap Wood and Small Craft Wood
• Gel Stain
• Optional: Yellow Acrylic Paint
• Tape Measurer
• Screws
• Drill and Drill Bits
• Farmhouse Hardware
• Optional: Hacksaw with Metal Blade

Structural Fixes

To transform your bookcase from old to new, you need to start off by filling in any holes or dents. I had a few dents in mine so, I used spackle (also known as putty) for this.

While drying, I cut wood for the top of the bookshelf. I screwed the piece of wood to the top of the bookcase to give the hardware enough room to slide across.

Depending on your bookshelf, you might not need to do the step above. Be sure to measure the farmhouse hardware to see how much room it needs to slide. Mine needed about 3”.

Next came the door, which in my opinion, makes the bookshelf look so good! For this piece, I cut a scrap piece of cabinet-grade plywood.

I want to note here that when you cut the dimensions for your door, be sure to factor in the farmhouse hardware. When I cut my door, I didn’t have all the hardware and forgot to account for the extra space on top. In my case, I don’t mind the extra-long door, but if you want the door to be exact, make sure you factor in the height of the hardware.

Another important thing to consider is the thickness of the door. For my farmhouse hardware, I didn’t want to go any larger than 1 ¼” thick. Luckily, the plywood was 1” thick, and the scrap piece of wood on top was ¼” thick.

So, after I cut the base of the door, I measured what I needed for the pieces to go on top. Because the door is so narrow, I didn’t want the traditional farmhouse design. I feel like it would have made the door look too small.

Instead, I cut out scrap pieces of wood for the horizontals. For the verticals, I used this craft wood that I bought for a different project that never happened. It ended up being exactly what I needed.

Consider adding a drawer handle if it works on the design of your farmhouse door. There is no good place to put one on my door, so I will not be adding one.

Finally, once I had everything cut, I put the smaller pieces of wood on the plywood to be sure everything fits together. Then, I sanded everything down. I put the pieces back and glued them down using wood glue.

After I assembled the door, I lightly sanded the bookcase.

Paint the Bookshelf

Now comes the painting part to transform your bookcase! I chose white chalk paint because I wanted something that would adhere to stain. It’s a LOT of work to completely remove stain. I did some research and discovered chalk paint was the way to go.

This paint is on the thicker side, and I had to put on three coats! I went through a good amount of the can! I also used a paint roller because I didn’t want brush strokes from a paintbrush. However, I recommend painting the top part with a paintbrush if you plan on staining the top. I’ll explain more about this in the next step.

Stain the Top of the Bookcase

Next comes the staining part. I chose to work with gel stain for a couple of reasons. One, I wanted something that could adhere to the paint. Two, I liked the concept of the gel enhancing the brushstrokes to look like wood.

Having used the gel stain for the first time, I have some feedback that I want to share with you before you do this process.

First and foremost, a gel stain is a thick stain meant to highlight texture to make it look like wood. I can’t speak for all gel stains, but the one I used is very thick.

Next, make sure you paint the top part with a paintbrush. I used a paint roller, not knowing that the base coat mattered as much as it did.

Choosing the Right Color Stain

This next piece of information has to do with the color of the stain itself. My goal for this piece was a lighter brown. After looking at reviews and photos of what other people did, I decided it was the color I wanted. After putting on the first coat, I realized I was wrong, and there are a few reasons.

So, when I did the first coat over the white paint, I noticed that the stain had purple undertones which is not what I wanted. I couldn’t get a picture to show the purple undertones, but the image below shows the first layer of stain.

The reason why it had purple undertones all boil down to color combination. Brown is a composition of opposite colors. So, for example, if you mix orange and blue together, you get brown.

It’s like black, which is an equal ratio of the primary colors, blue, red, and yellow. To get the opposite color of blue, you must mix red and yellow to make orange. So essentially, brown is the same makeup as black, but the ratio is different.

Because the stain I used was heavy on the purple undertones, that means they used a combination of purple and yellow. So instead of using a different stain, I diluted the purple undertones by adding yellow acrylic paint.

I mixed yellow acrylic paint with the stain in a separate container and got the exact color I wanted!! The only callout here is that the acrylic paint thins out the gel paint. I was okay with this because it allowed me to use the brush and get the brush strokes for the added texture.

If you add acrylic paint to your stain, don’t thoroughly mix it. I mixed it just enough, and it was perfect because it gave a slight variation in the tones on the base layer. This made it look more realistic. I have since used this technique on my headboard as well. You can read about my farmhouse bookshelf headboard here.

After that layer dried, I took a dry brush and lightly dipped the tip of the bristles in the original gel paint. I lightly brushed it on the top of the bookshelf to make it look like wood grain. After I did this a few times, drying the paintbrush off in between, I added character by going in the opposite direction and giving the grain a curvature in some areas.

Attach the Farmhouse Hardware

The final step to transform your bookcase is to add the hardware! The smallest rod for this type of hardware that I could find was 2ft. My bookshelf was just under that, so I had to find a way to extend the bookshelf or make the rod shorter.

Luckily for me, my brother has a hacksaw with a metal blade that can cut through metal. This is why I didn’t have the piece with me when I was doing the measurements for the door. My brother was nice enough to cut the piece for me back at his house.

So, after my brother cut the piece for me, I screwed it into the bookcase. Also, if you screw the centerpiece in as well, the door can’t move past it. I wanted my door to fully extend side to side, so I removed the metal covering from the screw. I decided that the aesthetic wasn’t worth the door not being able to fully shift from either side.

Coffee Table Refurbished the Easy Way

Okay, so the secret to success is simple. If you want the project to be easy, you must use a stain stripper. BAM! It’s really that easy. 

Now the next question becomes, what stain stripper is best to use? Personally, I can’t speak for all the stain strippers, but I do have experience with Klean Strip’s Premium Stripper, and there is a reason why I chose this stain stripper over Citristrip that will be discussed later in this post. 

Here is a guide if you want a full detailed tutorial on how to refurbish your coffee table from start to finish. For this post, I will highlight the major pros and cons of using Klean Strips Premium Stripper for your DIY Projects.

Tips on Using Klean Strips Stain Stripper

Before I get into the pros and cons, I want to mention a few tips and tricks to get the best experience using this product.

• Layer the stain stripper as thick as you can. If you don’t, the stain stripper will absorb into the furniture, and it’ll be harder to remove the stain. You’ll have to reapply if that happens, so load it up!
• Wear gloves!! This stuff is no joke. I go into more detail in my tutorial here, but needless to say, it ate away at a plastic cup, which leads me to my next bullet.
• If you decide to pour the stain stripper into a container (vs. right on the furniture), use a metal container and not plastic. It will eat away at thin plastic. 
• The instructions specify a plastic putty knife, but after what happened to me with the plastic cup, I decided to use metal. They probably recommended plastic so the metal putty knife doesn’t scratch the furniture surface. A way around this is to sand the edges of the metal putty knife, and then you’re good to go!
• Work in sections. The first time I used the stain stripper, I applied it to all the pieces. When I used the stain stripper for this project, I found it easier to work in sections. 
• Contrary to the instructions, once I applied the stain stripper, I found it easier to wait only a few moments and then start working at stripping the stain vs. the recommended 15 min. 
• Make sure you have enough stain stripper on hand. To put it in perspective, I had some leftover in a quart container plus a whole quart for this project. I finished the top and bottom pieces, plus the bottom part of the middle section. I didn’t have enough to finish the sides of the middle section, so I had to go to the store to pick up more. 
• After you have stripped the stain with the putty knife, go over the piece of furniture with mineral spirits and a clean sponge to remove any excess stain and stripper.
• Lastly, The stripper does appear to dry the wood out a bit. The image below shows the wood splitting. This probably would have happened if I sanded it, but it’s a callout that I want to bring to your attention.

Pros of Using Klean Strips Stain Stripper to Refurbish a Coffee Table

• It makes the project a lot easier because you don’t have to sand as much. In my experience, you still need to finish the project with a light sanding after using the stain stripper, but it significantly decreases the amount.
• It’s satisfying to watch the stain as it’s getting removed.
• After researching Citristrip reviews, I discovered it can leave your furniture with a blotchy texture. Klean Strip doesn’t have that negative side effect, which is why I chose their stain stripper.

Cons of Using Klean Strips Stain Stripper to Refurbish a Coffee Table

• It has intense chemicals.
• It can get messy (but then again sanding can too). 
• It can get pricey, which can defeat the purpose of upcycling furniture.
• You still have to sand. The type of wood affects the efficiency of the stripper. Whether it’s the stain stripper at fault or just how the stain sits on the wood either way, you’ll need to do some light sanding at the end. The good news is it’s relatively easy because most of the stain has been removed. See the image below for a comparison of the two. The left side is just the stripper, and the right is with the final sanding.
