To get started on your beeswax wraps DIY project, you’ll need a few materials. 

First, gather some 100% cotton fabric in various sizes to suit your needs – think about the different items you typically wrap or cover in your kitchen.

If you have a large piece of fabric, you can always cut it to size like I did.

Next, you will need beeswax pellets or a block of beeswax, which will be the protective coating for your wraps. 

Lastly, have some parchment paper, an iron, an extra towel, a double broiler, and a brush ready for the application process. Once you have all these materials, you’re ready to dive into the fun part!

Step-by-Step Guide to Making Beeswax Wraps

To create your beeswax wraps, start by melting the beeswax in a double boiler. If you don’t have one, you can use two pots and fill the larger one with water. 

I don’t recommend heating in the microwave (although in a perfect world, it would be easier and faster). This is because beeswax will burst into flames if it gets too hot. 

The temperature this happens at is 400 degrees, and I doubt the microwave would reach that temperature, but I don’t know about you, I’d rather not play with fire. 

Then, on a towel lined with parchment paper, place the cotton fabric on top. 

Next, use a brush to evenly distribute the melted wax over the fabric, making sure to cover all areas. 

Once you’ve coated all your fabric pieces, lift the edge and turn over the fabric. It dries pretty fast, but the idea is to completely melt the beeswax into the fabric vs it sitting on top. 

Next, take more parchment paper and put it on top of the fabric. With your iron on the lowest setting, melt the beeswax into the fabric so the cotton absorbs the beeswax. 

I’ve seen other people put the beeswax into the oven, which is another option, just remember to keep your oven on a low temperature. 

And there you have it! Allow to dry for a minute or so, and now you’ll be enjoying the benefits of eco-friendly beeswax wraps!

Tips for Reusing and Maintaining Beeswax Wraps

When reusing and maintaining your beeswax wraps, there are a few key tips to keep in mind. 

After using them to wrap food or cover containers, simply wash them with cool water and mild soap, making sure not to use hot water as it can melt the wax. 

Avoid using them with raw meat or hot items, as this can damage the wraps. To rejuvenate your wraps, you can place them in the oven on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper for a few minutes to redistribute the wax.

What is Lye?

So, to start with this easy homemade soap recipe, we first need to understand what lye is. 

Lye is the composition of water mixed with sodium hydroxide. 

When looking to purchase lye, you should look for sodium hydroxide, the solid form of lye. 

I bought this sodium hydroxide on Amazon, but I’m sure you can purchase this chemical in plenty of other locations. 

Sodium hydroxide is a manufactured substance, although natural ways exist to create lye without the manufactured sodium hydroxide.

Essentially, you are creating the sodium hydroxide yourself, using wood ash. This process was used to make soap before modern society was commercialized. 

While making lye organically is something I see myself doing in the future, for now, the Amazon delivery of sodium hydroxide is the way to go.

Is Lye Essential for Soap Making?

Well, to start, if you’re looking for an easy homemade soap recipe that doesn’t contain lye for the sake of not wanting to take the leap, I recommend using a melt-and-pour soap base.

This way, you will still make soap as a beginner in your early soap-making journey. However, these melt-and-pour soap bases still contain lye, but the saponification process has already taken place, turning the lye into soap.

This process is the chemical reaction when you combine lye (sodium hydroxide mixed in water) with a fat, lipid, or oil. 

During the chemical reaction, the lye reacts with the oils and converts into soap. 

So, technically, you do not have to use lye (sodium hydroxide plus water) for soap making, but the basis of the soap is the chemical reaction from an alkali liquid with a fat. Lye is just one type of alkali liquid, so you’ll be up against the same factors with other alkali liquids.

Tips for Working With Lye

To get started with this easy homemade soap recipe, we need to start with the basics. 

First, you’ll want to wear gloves, long sleeves, and safety goggles when working directly with lye. This may seem a little over the top, but trust me, it’s better than coming into direct contact with the lye. 

In addition, you should also cover the area you are working in. I did not take this piece of advice seriously and unfortunately learned the hard way. 

What ended up happening was the residual sodium hydroxide spilled on the counter when I was trying to remove it from the glass I used to measure it in. As a result, it ended up staining my butcherblock countertop almost instantly.

So learn from my mistake and cover your area properly. 

I’d also recommend using a disposable plastic container to measure the amount of sodium hydroxide you’ll need. However, keep in mind that not all plastic is created equal. 

A high-density polyethylene and polypropylene are the recommended plastics (HDPE, recycling code #2, PP, recycling code #5) to store sodium hydroxide, so if you can use a shampoo bottle, yogurt container, etc., to measure the chemical for soap-making, you’ll have easy cleanup because you can just through the container away if there is any residual left behind.

I would not recommend rinsing the sodium hydroxide down the drain. This is because when it is combined with water (to make lye) or neutralized with an acid, it creates substantial heat. Not something I would want to test on my drain any time soon. 

Easy Homemade Soap Cold Process Style

So now you know about lye and its importance in the soap-making process. And I know it’s a lot of information, and it sounds daunting, but trust me, it’s not as scary as it seems.

Think of it like cooking. While, yes, it’s possible to burn yourself or start a fire, if you are following proper procedures when you’re cooking, the chances of something bad happening are slim. 

I think many people get scared of working with Lye because it is not as common as some other activities we do regularly, which can be equally dangerous. 

This is why education is key, which I hope I have been able to do for you!

So, moving on, this easy homemade soap recipe is a cold-process soap. In contrast, a hot process soap recipe is harder to do, as it heats the soap from the outside, vs. cold press from the inside.

The benefit of the hot process is that you can achieve swirls in the soap and use color to your advantage. You can also use the soap right away vs. the 4-6 weeks a cold process soap needs to be able to cure.

Materials and Ingredients

You’ll need some materials for this easy homemade soap recipe. They are: 

• Soap mold (I have this one but recommend this one as it’s easier to pour the soap in one container. If you have the big one, you’ll also need something to cut it with)
• Immersion blender
• Digital kitchen scale
• Pan for melting ingredients
• Disposable plastic container (see why here)
• Goggles
• Gloves
• Thermometer
• Spoon or spatula
• Bowls for measuring ingredients

You’ll also need the ingredients! This recipe calls for: 

• 8 oz olive oil
• 8 oz coconut oil

• 4 oz mango butter
• 4.5 oz sodium hydroxide (lye)
• 10.2 oz water
• .5 oz fragrance oil (I used a mixture of orange, pine, eucalyptus and rosemary)

Description

Shea and mango butter soap with a hint of orange and pine scent!

Ingredients

• 8 oz olive oil
• 8 oz coconut oil
• 12 oz shea butter
• 4 oz mango butter
• 4.5 oz sodium hydroxide (lye)
• 10.2 oz water
• .5 oz fragrance oil

Instructions

1. Gather your materials and ingredients.
2. Melt all oils (olive, coconut, shea, and mango butter) on medium-low.
3. Add 10.2 oz of water to a glass container.
4. Slowly pour the 4.5oz of lye into the glass container with water (see more details here) and mix until dissolved. The lye will rapidly heat up during this process.
5. Allow oils and lye to cool to about 115 degrees (can be any temp within 10 degrees). This will take about 45 minutes.
6. After both liquids have reached the appropriate temperature, slowly pour the lye into the pan with the oils.
7. Immediately use your stick blender to mix until you have reached trace (when the liquid is thick enough to sit on top when dripped).
8. Add in .5 oz of fragrance oils. I used a mixture of orange, pine, eucalyptus, and rosemary.
9. Use your immersion blender to stir (NOT blend. You don’t want to overmix your solution).
10. Pour the mixture into your molds.
11. Cover and leave in a safe place for 24hrs.
12. After 24hrs remove from molds (cut if needed) and let the bars cure by placing them on their side for 4-6 weeks.

Katie T’s Cottage Home Fun Fact #32

For my 32nd  fun fact, I want to share that I am trying to do more canning this year! I plan on canning cucumbers this weekend to make pickles!

I’m super excited because I’ve wanted to do it for some time, but because I’m a beginner, it is a little nerve-racking. Obviously, I don’t want to mess it up, but I find the more I do it, the more comfortable I’m getting.

Dried Spices the Affordable Way

So, for the first step in this spice organization made easy tutorial, you’ll need spices to organize!

Now, use what you have on hand, but if you need to purchase more spices, I highly recommend you do either of these 2  things. 

Buy spices in bulk or dehydrate them yourself.

Spices are so expensive nowadays, and the reality is that the smaller the container, the more you’ll spend on it. That’s why I primarily buy my spices in bulk. 

Plus, it makes more sense to have nice containers like the ones I have if you are buying in bulk. Transferring the spices from the small container you buy at the store to a rustic container is more work for you in the long run, and for no other reason than it looks so much better. 

So again, if you have the space to store bulk containers of spices, I highly recommend it. Plus, spices don’t go bad. They might get a little sticky and hard if exposed to humidity, but it’s not like you have to worry about using them in a set period.  

The two places where I primarily get bulk spices are BJs and Amazon. BJs is a good option for the classics, oregano, garlic powder, italian, parsley, and so forth. On the other hand, Amazon is good for the spices that aren’t quite as popular, like coriander, fennel, cayenne, or even crushed red pepper. 

If you want to take it further and dehydrate your herbs to make spices, then that is also an affordable option. Especially if you grew the herbs in your garden!

Now, I’m not going to lie, fresh herbs are FAR superior to anything dried. There is so much more flavor in fresh herbs, for obvious reasons. 

However, dried herbs are convenient if you are making a recipe and don’t have fresh herbs on hand. 

So, if you plan on drying herbs to stalk up in your spice drawer, then there are 3 methods that you can use. Just be mindful that the herbs will shrink because you’re removing the water content. Each herb will shrink more or less, so don’t be afraid to dry more herbs than you think it will take. 

The 3 methods of preserving fresh herbs are hanging them, dehydrating them in a dehydrator, and/or microwaving them. 

A few things to note. If you hang dry them, this may take 1-2 weeks. You’ll also want to hang the leaf part upside down. This allows the leaves to retain some of their coloring because the oils from the stem flow downward into the leaves. 

On the other hand, you can always dehydrate the herbs in a microwave or dehydrator. Both are quicker than hanging the herbs. 

I used my ninja air fryer on the dehydrator setting to dry some of my herbs from the garden. This took about 5 hours at 115 degrees. 

Meanwhile, the microwave was significantly faster. I put the herbs in for a minute and added 30-second intervals until they were dry enough. Again, the time will vary depending on the water content of that particular herb.

The benefit of drying your herbs compared to buying them at the grocery store is that the herbs retain more color, which means that they are of higher quality.

Spice Drawer vs. Rotating Spice Rack

Spice organization is super easy and satisfying when you store the spice jars in a drawer. 

I used to have a rotating spice rack because it was convenient to have the spices near the oven on top of the counter, not taking up valuable space in a drawer.

However, over time, the rotating spice rack was not ideal, and this is for a few reasons. 

First, because it was too close to the oven. While this is convenient in some senses, it also creates more work. Because it was in the vicinity of where oil splattered when cooking, it meant it got dirty quickly.

To make it worse, if it wasn’t cleaned daily, the rotating spice rack was a prime candidate for dust settling and becoming gross. 

The second reason is that cleaning it wasn’t easy due to all the nooks and crannies. Compared to a spice rack within a drawer, it’s just a flat surface. Wooden at that, so the metal doesn’t leave a streaky texture when wiped.

Lastly, because the spice rack rotated, if anything was behind it, it would shift or get in the way of rotating. It’s a minor issue, but an issue nonetheless. Having a spice rack in the drawer makes it super easy to access without anything else getting in the way. 

Easy Spice Recipes

The last step in your spice organization overhaul is to make your spices! This will also cut costs because you probably have ingredients to make some of the specialty spices, and you don’t even know it!

For example, you can make mesquite seasoning by combining spices: 

• ½ tsp garlic powder
• 1 tsp onion powder
• 3 tbsp brown sugar
• ½ tsp chili powder
• 2 tsp salt
• 1 mounding tbsp smoked paprika

Another easy spice to make is to grind mustard seeds for a dry mustard powder. 

You can also make an Italian herb blend by combining parsley, basil, thyme, rosemary, and oregano.

Free Cricut Spice Jar Labels

So, as promised, your FREEBIE for this spice organization made easy guide! This freebie is for individuals who have a Cricut machine. If you don’t know what a Cricut is, I have a full article on everything you need to know about a Cricut before you make the purchase.

In full disclosure, this process is a little tedious. The spice jars I purchased came with labels, but I wanted something different. I love the font Rastanty Cortez from Microsoft Word, Excel, etc., but unfortunately, the Cricut design space doesn’t have a free font like this (at least not that I can find). 

The other issue is the Word or Excel document needs to be transferred to an image for the Cricut design space to accept it. I am unsure if there is an easier way to do this, but I saved the Excel file as a PDF and opened it with Photoshop to convert it to an image.

I removed the background of the spice labels in Photoshop. Because I did this step, the free PNG spice image will be easier to upload to the Cricut design space. You won’t have to remove the background manually. 

Photoshop also has a function where I can layer the font to make it slightly bolder. I added this feature to the free templates. When I did this project myself, I found if I didn’t layer the font, it was too thin to cut, and when I bolded the font directly in Excel, it was too chunky looking. Layering the font via Photoshop allowed the text to be bolded enough to make cutting and weeding the vinyl easy. 

Because Photoshop requires a subscription, I went ahead and put a template together for everyone to use, and it is FREE! If you are interested in picking a different font, photoshop offers a free trial (at least last I checked), so if you don’t like the font I chose, you can follow the steps I took to create your customized font. 

For anyone interested in the free spice labels, I have separated them into two lists: the popular spices, and additional spices. I separated them this way to make it easy during the uploading phase.

The popular spice list includes the spices that I thought would be the most popular. The additional spice list is more uncommon but still used. Once you get to the uploaded step in this process, you’ll see why I thought it might be easier to separate it this way.

Just be sure to unzip the file when you download it and follow the traditional steps you would to cut something with your Cricut!

Practicality vs. Styling

One day I was eye-guzzling Instagram reels, and I kept seeing reels on wearing vs. styling different outfits. It occurred to me that home decor is not much different.

You can have any area in the home as is, “wearing”, but adding the proper accent pieces will upgrade the area as a whole “styling”.

However, not all of the styling tips are practical. And I think this is where it is easy to get lost. Because with any promotion, you run the risk of feeling like every nook and cranny of your house has to be just so. This creates unrealistic expectations.

This is why I advocate making areas in your home look aesthetic while still being practical. I go into more detail on how I made a practical kitchen counter centerpiece look aesthetic in the article below.

For the sake of getting to the point for this post, I’ll share the obstacle I encountered last year.

Practical Kitchen Ideas in the Making

Last year I bought this kitchen soap tray to organize my kitchen essentials. I searched and scoured Amazon to find what I was envisioning for my kitchen.

When I found it, I made the impulse buy without giving it a second thought. When the package came in and I opened it, I knew right away that the wood was not water-resistant. 

At that moment, I decided I would need to figure out a way to waterproof it. In the meantime, I decided I’d “be careful” and set it up anyway because I was excited to see it in my kitchen.

I told my husband my plan to waterproof it but, in the meantime, to be careful. That same night I discovered soap residue on the tray… I should have known. But to make it worse, I kept it as is and said we’d have to be mindful to take the soap dispenser out whenever we were washing the dishes. 

Well, that didn’t work. The next day when I did dishes, I took the soap dispenser out, but because it was not far enough away from the tray, water still managed to splash and left even more water damage than the night prior. At that moment, I decided I needed to waterproof it ASAP before it got worse.

DIY Soap Tray: The Hack

Having experience with DIYs and crafting, I knew there were different products made for making wood water resistant. So, I dug out this polycrylic and got to work. 

Just be sure to use the matte polycrylic if you don’t want excessive shine.

It will still be relatively shiny, and it will darken the wood, but considering mine is a year in and it’s still waterproof/resistant, I’d say it’s a worthy sacrifice.

You’ll also need painter’s tape, a sponge or brush to apply the polycrylic, and an exacto knife/ kitchen knife or painter’s spatula (which is what I used because the exacto knife can scratch).

Taping the Metal Frame

Other practical kitchen ideas include finding a waterproof tray. I mean, it would make sense being so close to the sink. Or, perhaps an oil tray that is not as close to the sink.

But for this kitchen, there isn’t a ton of counter space, and I was already invested in the style of this modern cottage tray. So I got to work.

You’ll want to start by taping the metal frame. You don’t need to tape it perfectly around the circular edge, just completely cover the metal part. Then go back with the knife or painter’s spatula and cut the excess tape off. You can use the metal as a guide to get a clean edge.

Apply the Polycrylic as Directed

Apply the Polycrylic as directed. I painted the first coat and waited 2 hours before applying the second one. I debated doing a third coat, but I tested the wood after the second coat. The water did not soak through, so that was my way of knowing that 2 coats were sufficient. 

Practical Kitchen Ideas

In summary, to achieve the balance between a practical and a stylish kitchen, you’ll need to consider what issues you are facing and the workaround needed to solve those issues.

Katie T’s Farmhouse Home Fun Fact #3

Before I jump into this DIY wooden sign project tutorial, I want to mention a fun fact about myself! This is a new section I’m including on my blog posts so my readers can get to know me on a personal level! So far, this is the third one I’ve done, so I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below!

So, for my third fun fact, I want to share that I live in the New England area! 

Contrary to other people in this area, I actually love the winter! I love the snow and how pretty it looks on the trees. I also look forward to the colder weather so I can go ice skating on a pond near my parent’s house! 

Choosing the Right Materials

Before we dive into designing your wooden sign, let’s first talk about the importance of choosing the right materials. Just as a chef selects the finest ingredients to create a mouthwatering dish, you too should carefully consider the wood and tools you’ll use to bring your vision to life.

When selecting the wood for your sign, there are a few factors to keep in mind. First, consider the desired aesthetic of the sign. Do you want a frame around the edges of the sign, similar to my project? If so, you’ll need to find a thin sheet of plywood.

Because the frame can only hold so much weight, you’ll want to find the thinnest sheet of plywood possible. I found this 6×6′ sheet at Home Depot. 

Once you’ve selected the perfect wood and frame, it’s time to consider the tools you’ll need for the job. To start, you’ll need a circular saw to cut the sheet of plywood to your desired dimension. 

Note: below I have details to make this step super simple, so be sure to check out the last section. 

Depending on your design, you may also require custom vinyl, a router for creating intricate details, or even a woodburning tool.

Because I have a Cricut, (more info on what a Cricut is here), I went with the custom vinyl route. This machine allowed me to design and cut out the barn and text for the custom wooden sign. 

You’ll also need stain or spray paint, which I go into more detail on my methods below. 

Designing Your Wooden Sign

Before diving into the design process, take a moment to consider the purpose and theme of your sign. What message do you want it to convey? Is there a specific style or aesthetic you’re aiming for? 

When it comes to designing your wooden sign, simplicity often wins. Think about using clean lines, easy-to-read fonts, and a logical layout. Remember, your primary goal is to communicate the message clearly and effectively. Fancy and intricate designs might look appealing, but they could also make your sign harder to read from a distance.

I made this sign for my father-in-law as a Christmas gift. He plans on building a barn, so it felt fitting to give him a Christmas gift that reflects his upcoming project.

First, I started with the frame. I wasn’t in love with the glossy finish, so I spray-painted it with black matte spray paint.

Then, after I cut the plywood to fit the frame, I stained it. I had a vision in mind for what I wanted the wooden sign to look like. The stain color was one of the aspects I was particular about.

I wanted orange undertones without it being that ugly orange stain. You know, the stain that a lot of old furniture pieces have. So, I decided to experiment.

I mixed light walnut stain, walnut gel stain, and mineral spirits to thin it out. The consistency was, unsurprisingly clumpy from the gel stain, but I was okay with that. I didn’t mind variations in the undertone. In fact, I was hoping for a slight variation.

After mixing the stain and testing it on a separate scrap piece of wood, I finally achieved the desired shade and stained the sheet of plywood.

If you plan on following these steps, a couple of things to note. First, don’t be afraid to experiment. I have more information on color theory and how to use this knowledge to influence your stain here. Also, I have more information on gel stain here.

Adding Personalized Details

Adding personalized details to your wooden sign allows you to put your stamp on the finished product. Whether you’re creating a sign for your workshop or as a gift for someone else, these personal touches will make it truly special. 

One way to personalize your wooden sign is by incorporating your handwriting or lettering. You can use stencils or trace letters onto your sign and then paint or carve them. 

This adds a beautiful and unique touch that showcases your style. If you don’t feel confident in your handwriting skills, you can use custom stencils or decals to add personalized text or designs.

Another option for adding personalized details is to include meaningful symbols or words that hold significance to you or the workshop. It could be a logo, a favorite quote, or a reference to heritage (like what I did by saying “Italian workshop”).

By putting thought into the personalized details of your wooden sign, you’re ensuring that it becomes a meaningful piece that represents you or the person you are making it for. 

These elements will make it stand out from generic signs and show the care and attention to detail that went into its creation. 

Tips for Professional Results

Now that you know how to create a custom DIY wooden sign for the workshop, it’s time to review a few tips and tricks.

1. Hanging the wooden sign. Before you jump into creating your sign, make sure you have a plan for attaching the proper wire to hang it. Because the sheet of plywood is so thin, I didn’t want to risk screwing a hole into it, so I took a thicker scrap piece of wood and used wood glue to adhere it to the back. From there, I attached the wire hanging kit as instructed. 

2. Cutting the plywood to dimension: If you’re prepared and want to make life easier on yourself, bring the exact dimensions to Home Depot, and they can cut the board for you. I had them cut it so it would fit in my car, but I didn’t have the exact dimensions. This resulted in having to cut it when I got home. Make life easier on yourself, and be prepared! 

3. Vinyl decal tips. If you add vinyl decals like I did (whether you cut it yourself or purchase custom ones from Etsy), make sure the surface is flat. If there are any indents in the wood, the vinyl will not adhere properly.

Understanding the Importance of a Food-Safe Wood Finish

To create a natural wood sealer that is safe for contact with food, it is crucial to understand a few things. 

While traditional wood finishes may provide some level of protection, they often contain harmful chemicals that can leach into food or pose health risks to you and your loved ones. 

This is where a food-safe wood finish comes in, offering a solution that prioritizes the safety and well-being of your family. While sealing your wooden project properly.

This sealer should be used on items like cutting boards, countertops, utensils, or any wooden item that comes in direct contact with food. 

For example, I made this charcuterie board with food-safe stain and marble vinyl. I wanted to add a protective layer to it, but wanted it to be food-safe. This is what inspired me to write this post for you guys! 

Choosing the Right Ingredients for Your Natural Wood Sealer

Creating a food safe wood finish also aligns with the growing trend towards sustainability and eco-friendliness. By opting for a natural and non-toxic, handmade wood finish, you are making a conscious choice to reduce your environmental footprint and become more self-sufficient. 

In this world of consumerism and convenience, self-sufficiency is becoming a dying art. So, if there is an area where I can combat this downward trend, I will. 

So, to create a natural wood sealer that is both effective and safe, it is crucial to choose the right ingredients. The ingredients you select will determine the quality and longevity of your wood finish, as well as its ability to provide adequate protection.

When selecting the ingredients for your natural wood sealer, there are several key factors to consider. First and foremost, you want to ensure that the ingredients you choose are food-safe and non-toxic. 

This means avoiding any chemicals or additives that may pose a health risk. Look for ingredients that are natural and derived from sustainable sources, such as plant-based oils and waxes.

Another important consideration is the specific properties of the ingredients. Different oils and waxes offer different levels of protection and enhance the natural beauty of wood in different ways. 

For example, tung oil is known for its excellent water resistance, while linseed oil enhances the richness of the wood grain. Be sure to research the properties of each ingredient and choose ones that align with your desired outcome for the wood sealer.

For the wood finish I made, I chose organic beeswax pellets and butcherblock oil. These two ingredients were used for a couple of reasons.

First and foremost, it’s what I had on hand. If you’re new to this blog, I’m all about being resourceful and using what I already have to achieve a desired outcome.

And I just so happen to have these two ingredients so it seemed perfect.

The second reason (and why I had this on hand) is because of the antibacterial properties of beeswax. I’m a big advocate of beeswax in everyday items whether it’s a homemade candle, beeswax wrap, or perhaps in beauty products. 

Lastly, the butcherblock oil is designed to be made for cutting boards (a.k.a butcher block). So the oil is not only food safe, but it’s also a better oil to use in this type of application because it doesn’t go rancid as quickly compared to other oils.

Step-by-Step Guide: Making Your Food-Grade Wood Finish

Once you have carefully selected your ingredients, it’s time to follow this easy step-by-step process to create your food-grade wood finish. 

If you are choosing the same ingredients as I did, all you need to do is melt the beeswax and mix it with the butcher block oil.

I used a double broiler method to melt the beeswax (I go into more detail on how to clean the pans in the bonus section below). The thought process here was using a slower method to avoid overheating.

So once I melted about a 1/2 cup of beeswax pellets I added 3/4 of a 12 fl oz bottle of butcher block oil. I then transferred the mixture into a glass container and let it sit while stirring occasionally until it hardened to a gel-like substance.

Testing and Applying Your Homemade Wood Sealer

Once the sealant has completely hardened, you can apply it to your wooden project using a clean cloth or paper towel. 

After completely applying the sealer, let it dry overnight. Then remove any access the following day with a dry paper towel. 

For added layers of protection, you can repeat this process and apply multiple coats. I, however, only did one as this charcuterie board is one of many so it probably won’t be used daily. 

Bonus Tip: How to Wash Wood with this Sealer

Now that you have successfully applied your homemade sealer, you’re in for a treat with this bonus tip on how to wash your brand-new wood project!

This is a hand-wash-only type of sealer, but that is nothing special as all of my wooden kitchen serveware is handwash only. 

The important part, however, is not to let the water sit for a long time on the wooden surface.

And what I mean by that is, when you wash it, the water will naturally bead up (which is how you’ll know that the sealer is doing its job). However, I tend to let the dishes air dry vs. drying them off right away with a towel.

And because there were residual beads of water on the charcuterie board, they did soak in with time and slightly stain the wood. 

Not enough where it’s super noticeable, but enough to be annoying, so learn from my mistakes!!

Also, when cleaning the double broiler or pots, don’t add water to it. At least, not until the pot has completely dried and you can chip off any residual beeswax. Trust me on this one, it is SO much easier to do it this way!

Choosing the Right Wood for the Charcuterie Board

Choosing the right wood for your charcuterie board is a vital step in ensuring its beauty and durability. The type of wood and shape you select can enhance the overall aesthetic of your platter and determine its functionality. 

I picked up this pine wooden round at Michaels, but you can also get similar ones on Amazon. They have a package deal or even wooden rounds with an edge. 

Just note that applying the marble vinyl on a round edge is harder than a flat edge, so keep this in mind when picking your board. I will walk you through how I did it in the steps below. 

Also, consider the color and grain pattern of the wood when choosing which one to use. Each wood variety has unique characteristics and hardness. So, if you chose a maple or oak and stained it like I did on my pine charcuterie board, then the color will look different. So, again, keep this in mind. 

Additionally, it’s important to choose food-safe wood. Avoid using wood that has been treated with chemicals or finishes that may be harmful when in contact with food. 

Gathering the Materials

Before you can transform a simple wooden board into a stunning charcuterie platter, you’ll need to gather the materials. 

• Wood Round
• Food Safe Stain
• Food Safe Sealer
• Marble Vinyl
• 2 Mason Jars
• Cheesecloth
• Coffee
• Cocoa Powder
• Rag for Staining
• Water
• Hair Dryer

A couple of things to note here. I will go into more detail in the section below on how I made the food-safe stain using cocoa powder, coffee, and wine. I also made the food-safe sealer using beeswax and butcherblock oil and will create a post and link it here. In the meantime, you can get similar sealers on Amazon. 

I also want to disclaim that the vinyl itself doesn’t claim to be food-safe however, I used this vinyl on my counters several years ago, and I can’t imagine there would be any issues using it on the charcuterie board. I also plan on sealing the beeswax over it for an added layer, but proceed however you feel comfortable. 

Applying a Food-Safe Stain

Now that you have all the materials for the board, it’s time to take it to the next level by applying a food-safe stain. A food-safe stain not only enhances the natural beauty of the wood, but it’s easy and cheap to make!

There are many ways to make different variations of stain at home. I chose cocoa powder and coffee. I’m not entirely sure if the brand affects the coloration of the stain, but I used Nature’s Promise cocoa powder and Maxwell House ground coffee. 

First, I boiled water and, while that was getting up to temperature, added 1 1/2 mounding spoonfuls of cocoa powder and 3 mounding spoonfuls of coffee into a mason jar. Then I poured the water into the jar, covered it, and let it sit for 2 hours. I shook the jar every so often to get the grounds and cocoa to mix. 

After the stain mixture sat long enough, I strained it. I put a folded cheesecloth over the top of another mason jar and poured the mixture through. 

And now you’re ready to stain! Dip a rag into the stain mixture and stain your board. It’s not overly strong so it did take 6 coats for me. The good part is, you also don’t have to wear gloves because there are no harsh chemicals! 

For an added bonus I’ll let you in on a little secret in this process. After the 6th coat (shown in the image above), I felt it was too heavy on the yellow undertones. To counterbalance it, I needed to find a food-safe stain that had purple hues.

It needed to be purple because purple is the opposite color of yellow. Applying the opposite color will offset the stronger color, yellow. So, after recalling the purple lips I get from Carlo Rossi wine, I decided to add 2 coats of wine to it. The wine gave it a purplish-redish tint. Not exactly what I wanted, but better than before!

Adding Stylish Marble Vinyl Accents

Marble vinyl accents not only add a touch of elegance to your serving platter but also provide a durable and easy-to-clean surface that is perfect for entertaining. Before applying the vinyl, make sure the stain has completely dried to avoid any smudging or smearing.

To create the marble effect, first, measure and cut the vinyl into the desired shape and size to fit your board. You can cover the entire surface or only have a strip down the middle like I did. 

Once the vinyl is cut, carefully peel off the backing and position it onto the stained wood. Start from one edge and work your way across, smoothing out any bubbles or wrinkles as you go. 

It’s recommended to use a credit card or a smoothing tool to ensure a clean and even application. Just don’t use anything sharp because it will scratch the edge. 

Now for the challenging part, cutting the edge. I used the edge of the board and ran scissors through the vinyl like cutting through wrapping paper.

Sealing the Serving Platter with Beeswax

As I mentioned above, I will eventually make a tutorial on how to make beeswax food save sealer from beeswax pellets and butcherblock oil. In the meantime, you can always get it on Amazon. 

To begin the sealing process, ensure that your serving platter is clean and dry. Any dirt or residue on the surface can interfere with the beeswax’s ability to adhere properly. 

Next, take a clean cloth or napkin, scrape the top of the sealer, and apply it to the board. The marble vinyl doesn’t need a ton as it doesn’t soak into the board like it does on the wood. 

Once you have finished applying the beeswax, allow your serving platter to dry and cure for at least 24 hours. This curing time allows the beeswax to fully harden and bond with the wood. After 24 hours, gently buff the surface with a clean cloth to remove excess wax and reveal a smooth, lustrous finish. Just note that this sealer is water resistant, not waterproof. So you can wash it, just be sure to dry it right after to avoid any water sinking through the sealer.

By sealing your DIY charcuterie board with beeswax, you not only protect its natural beauty but ensure its durability and longevity. The beeswax acts as a barrier, shielding the wood from potential damage. Plus, it allows the board to handle water and oil from food or washing.

Sand the Vase

I sanded the vase lightly before I got started. This way, the plaster wrap will have an easier time adhering to the vase.

Clean the Vase

Next, you’ll want to clean the vase. 

Add Masking Tape

This step is optional if you want to have a nontextured area like I did on mine. But essentially, all you’ll need to do is add some masking tape to the vase wherever you don’t want the plaster wrap to go.

Add the Plaster Wrap to the Vase

Now comes the fun part of this DIY vase refurbishment! You get to add the plaster wrap. To do this, you’ll need a bowl of water and cut-up pieces of plaster wrap.

Once you’ve cut the plaster wrap into manageable pieces, you’ll need to dip it in the water to get the strip of plaster wrap completely wet. Take it out of the water, but hold it over, so you don’t drip everywhere.

Next, take your fingers, and starting from the top of the strip, pinch and slide your fingers down the plaster wrap. The point of doing this is to distribute the plaster throughout the wrap so you don’t end up with tiny little holes. This step is very important and will make applying the plaster wrap to the vase easier.

Once you’ve done the step above a few times and the plaster is even on the strip, you can add it to the vase. Because I wanted to fill in parts of my vase, I applied it to the negative areas in the top section.

To get the ripple effect on the vase, you’ll need to wrap the plaster piece relatively flat to start. It doesn’t have to be perfect because you’ll bunch up certain areas anyway. Then, after you bunch it up in those areas, take your finger and smooth out the rest of the wrap. 

I also want to note that you shouldn’t put any plaster wrap over the masking tape. Unlike paint, this will rip the plaster when you remove it. Look at the tape as more of a guide than anything else.

After you have completely wrapped the plaster around the vase, let it sit and completely dry. I left mine overnight before I attempted any spray paint.

Spray Paint your Vase

Next, you can spray paint your vase! Keep the tape on the bottom for now, then spray paint your vase with the first coat. I used smokey beige.

Then, if you choose to get the textured look, you can spray paint it with stone spray paint. I did two coats of this on mine. Also, before the second coat, I removed the masking tape so the bottom part got texture.

For the final coat, I used the gold spray paint.

After you’ve spray-painted it to your liking, let it completely dry.

The sweet and warm scent creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere in my home, making it the perfect choice for creating a comforting and soothing ambiance. But, as I said earlier, I’m trying to switch to a non-toxic alternative, and I’m not sure what ingredients were used to create the original candle so I decided to see if I could recreate it! 

Furthermore, maple syrup is something that I always have on hand, so I didn’t need to go out and buy specific essential oils to enhance the smell. I will, however, review how to add essential oils to your candle as an alternative or in addition to the maple syrup.

Step-by-Step Guide: Creating Organic Beeswax Candles

To begin, gather all the necessary materials: organic beeswax pellets, maple syrup, candle wicks, a double boiler (or two pots that fit into one another), and any desired candle molds or containers. 

I used a container that had a candle in it prior, but if you don’t have one, get creative! Use a mason jar or a vintage glass container! 

Next, you’ll want to melt the beeswax. Start by filling the bottom pot of your double boiler with water and placing it on the stove. Place the second pot on top of the bottom one. 

Add the organic beeswax to the top pot and turn the heat to medium-low. Allow the wax to melt slowly.

While the beeswax is melting, prepare your candle molds or containers. Make sure they are clean and dry. Place a candle wick at the center of each container, ensuring it stands upright. Secure the wicks in place using a wick holder or by tying them to a skewer placed across the top of the container. Once a little bit of wax melts, you can add that to the bottom of the container to hold the wick in place. 

Once the organic beeswax has melted completely, remove it from the heat and add in a small amount of maple syrup. The ratio of beeswax to syrup will depend on your desired scent and color intensity, so feel free to experiment. Stir the mixture gently and thoroughly to ensure the syrup is evenly distributed throughout the wax.

Next, carefully pour the beeswax and maple syrup mixture into your prepared molds or containers. Allow the candles to cool and solidify completely before moving them. Once the candles have fully hardened, trim the wicks to a suitable length, leaving about ¼ inch exposed.
