Because I ran into all those issues, I switched gears to plans B, C, D, etc., to work around the problems I was facing. Everything worked out because I ended up with a far better metal filing cabinet makeover than what I set out to do. So, let me share the tips and tricks I discovered along the way!

Rustic Farmhouse Filing Cabinet Makeover for Your Home

So, to jump right into this rustic filing cabinet tutorial, you should understand why this cabinet makeover is so great.

The first reason is the worn look of the black metal. I anticipate that the paint on this product will chip and scratch with time.

A scratch on the flat and consistent paint would be noticeable. Because the appeal of this style is to look worn, the scratches that will come with time will only add to the charm.

The second reason is that I used vinyl floor planking on the face of the cabinet. The floor planking looks better than the contact paper vinyl. It’s also a LOT easier to install, which I will go into more depth about later in this post.

Note: if you plan on tackling a similar project, please read this entire article. Not only did I make plenty of mistakes getting the filing cabinet to look good, but there are things I would have done differently. So be sure to read all the tips and tricks carefully so you don’t face the same problems I did!

Be Methodical with Your Approach

This tip seems like a no-brainer, but when it comes to your rustic metal filing cabinet diy, it’s so true! 

My filing cabinet had recessed handles, so the whole face of the cabinet was flat except for that indentation. I decided that I could attach a plank of wood over it to give a farmhouse door look. I used wood from a leftover pallet to save money on this DIY project.

After I measured what I needed, I cut the pallet to the appropriate length. When I placed it on the face of the filing cabinet drawer, it looked terrible. I played around with it to see if I could make it look good, but the wood was too thick.

After wasting time and thinking about ways to use wood for this project, I decided to move on. I scrapped that idea and came up with what I thought was better.

Mistake #2: Vinyl Contact Paper

When I scrapped the wood pallet idea, I remembered I had some vinyl contact paper with a wooden pattern that would look great on the face of the drawers. At this point, I decided I would paint the rest of the cabinet matte black. I used this spray paint because it’s made for metal.

Originally, I was going to paint the base of the cabinet white for this rustic metal filing cabinet DIY because I am a sucker for the white look. But I decided that black would look better in this application. Especially comparing it to the original vinyl, the black just looked better.

Before you spray paint or apply anything, make sure you thoroughly clean your filing cabinet. I used dawn soap and scrubbed it down with this sponge. The green side of the sponge was perfect for scratching the original paint job. I wanted to sand the original paint so that the new paint could adhere to the metal better.

After I cleaned the cabinet, I spray-painted the base. I was not too worried about getting the coat even (as you can see from the hack job in the image). I knew I would be sanding it after, so if anything, the splotchy areas added to the worn look.

As the base of the metal filing cabinet was drying, I worked on the drawers. Because the drawers had recessed handles, I had to fill them, so the face of the drawer was flat.

Admittedly, I taped a roll of thick paper towels, and it worked. It had a slight bulge, but if you did not know it was there, you would not have been able to tell.

Next came the vinyl. I applied the vinyl to the face of the metal filing cabinet drawer. This step was the most frustrating part of the process. It would not stick, no matter how much I sanded the back side of the drawer to wrap the vinyl around. I used two different types of glue, including Loctite, but both were not working.

At this point, I decided that the glue might not be working because it needs pressure while drying. I tried clipping the area I was working on, but the clips kept sliding off because of the angle of the edges.

I finally decided to take masking tape and tape the edges.

Humorously, the tape was doing a good job adhering to the back side of the drawer. Because this area is visible only when you open the drawer, I decided to keep it.

I also added vinyl to the top of the metal filing cabinet because I liked the look of the wood. You will soon find out why I did not end up keeping it.

Do NOT Use Vinyl Contact Paper on Your Rustic Filing Cabinet

At this point in my rustic filing cabinet makeover journey, some time passed due to the weather. I wanted to work on this project outside, and my area was experiencing some snow, so I waited until warmer weather.

Once it became nice again, I found the time to finish the project. Unfortunately, I ran into some problems. The first problem was the vinyl developed air pockets underneath. I spread them out the best I could, but it was still noticeable.

After having experienced that, I can confidently say that I would not recommend vinyl contact paper on a metal filing cabinet. The air pockets could have developed because I left it outside on my screened-in porch. So, I do not know if the cold had something to do with it, but I would hate to put all the work in with the same results.

I decided to continue with the vinyl because I was in a crunch for time and wanted to finish this project soon, so I continued to work on it.

I removed the top vinyl piece because I prefer a worn look to the vinyl filled with air pockets.

I started to prepare the area for the drawer hardware. I bought this hardware for another project and had some leftovers, so it came in handy for this application.

I attempted to drill the hole towards the center of the drawer over the recessed handle. If you do this step, be sure you have the proper bits for your drill. I have this bit kit that includes bits meant for metal. I also recommend that you go slow when drilling into the metal.

As I drilled into the face of the drawer, I noticed it was not going in. I investigated and found I was drilling directly over the thick piece of metal for the recessed handle. It was too thick to continue.

Updating Rustic Filing Cabinet the Right Way

At this point in the project, I was so discouraged. The drill left a hole in the vinyl and a dent in the metal.

Even if I wanted to redo the vinyl on the whole drawer again, I would have to wait because I did not have enough left to do the face of the drawer.

At that moment, I decided that I would need to think of something else.

Then it came to me. I bought vinyl flooring planks a while ago for a different project that never happened. I hunted down the planking in a back closet and got to work.

I decided to keep the vinyl sheets on the face of the drawers because the floor planking seemed to adhere to it better than the straight metal. With that said, if you plan on giving your filing cabinet a similar makeover, I recommend buying glue proven to adhere to metal and putting this on the whole face of the drawer. Doing so will help the planking stick to the metal.

After I placed the planking down, I got the drill out again. This time, I planned on putting the hardware closer to the top of the drawer. I managed to do this rather quickly.

The Kitchen Layout

The fourth quick tip in this mini-series is weighing the pros and cons of the kitchen layout. 

The kitchen has many different elements to think about, so I may do a mini-series on the kitchen alone in the future.

In a modern farmhouse, the kitchen is not just a place for cooking–it’s a space where memories are made and families gather. 

As the hub of activity, the kitchen should be designed with both aesthetics and practicality in mind. From durable countertops to efficient storage solutions, every element in the kitchen should serve a purpose while still adding to the overall design aesthetic. 

The big takeaway here is to think about situations like the examples below BEFORE and DURING the design stage. Don’t settle for a kitchen someone else designed with their preferences in mind.

• Where will everything be stored? (literally, take the example kitchen that you have and think about where your plates, cups, bowls, beeswax wrap, excessive Tupperware, etc. will go before you give the final approval on the design)
• Do you want a window near the sink? 
• Do you want a center island for food prep? Or would you rather have a U-shaped kitchen?
  • If either, think about the distance from the food prep area to the sink, stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher and if this distance is ideal for your cooking style.
• Does the location of the dishwasher make for optimal loading and unloading? Ex. Is the dishwasher in the corner or in an area where it will be harder to put the dishes away?
• Are you opting for easy-to-clean surfaces?
• Will specific options look dirty/stain easily? (For example, a white kitchen sink looks gorgeous in my book, but it does stain if you don’t keep it on top of it).

So, the quick tip here is to think about how the kitchen functions when it’s in use because this will make or break your overall satisfaction with cooking in the kitchen.

Yes, you read that right! If you’ve never tried dill pickles on pizza (both red and white sauces are equally good but for different reasons) then you should totally try it!

The Key to Saving Money on DIY Projects

Okay, so what I’m about to tell you is the big key to saving money. It might seem like a no-brainer, but it’s super important. Without knowing how to do this the right way, you won’t save nearly as much money as you could. And don’t worry, I will go into full detail and break down how to go about implementing this hack into your everyday DIY project. 

So are you ready to know what it is? It’s simple. You have to be thrifty. 

I bet being thrifty is not what you were expecting! But let me break this down because being thrifty means so much more than just going to a thrift store.

How to Save Money

At its core, saving money means not spending it. However, when doing DIY projects, you need materials. So, you have to think outside the box with ways to acquire materials without buying them at full cost.

I see a lot of other bloggers mention thrift stores as one of the ways that they save money. That’s great, but personally, I think it can be taken a step further.

The tools required to save money on DIY or even décor projects are creativity, connections, space, and time. Below, I explain and give examples of applying these four aspects to your DIY or décor routines.

Creativity

Okay, so this tip might be a challenge to start with. But once you get used to actively implementing it, it becomes second nature. To do this, you have to follow two simple steps. 

First, you have to diagnose the problem. To give an example, I wanted a farmhouse-styled coffee station. I didn’t have any furniture that matched what I was envisioning. That meant I either had to buy something or make it. 

The next step to being creative is to stop looking at materials for face value.

So, to continue with my example, I had a readily available bookcase, just sitting in my closet. Instead of keeping it a bookcase, I decided to turn it into a coffee station! By going beyond the face value of the bookcase, I now have a coffee station. 

Below are some more examples of this process:

I wanted a large picture frame in the master bedroom without having to go out and buy one (problem). So, I decided to make one out of wood. Instead of buying new wood, I decided to use the wood from pallets (not looking at materials for face value).

Another example is this desk that I got for free from Facebook Marketplace. It needed some updating and TLC to match the vision I wanted for the desk. 

After using it before updating it, I decided to go without the top piece and only focus on the bottom half. Pieces were missing from the bottom half, making gaps between the cabinets (problem). 

So, I took trim from the top part and attached it to the bottom portion of the desk to fill the gaps (not looking at materials for face value).

I also had this metal filing cabinet that needed a visual upgrade (problem). I decided to spray paint the base and use vinyl flooring for the face of the drawers (not looking at materials for face value).

Lastly, this jar was in my kitchen cabinet, taking up space (problem). I already have jars that I like to use because they are more my style. Instead of tossing the jar, I turned it into a decorative vase (not looking at materials for face value).

Now you know how to diagnose a problem and solve it by not looking at materials for face value!

Connections

So, this piece is also important. Without it, you won’t be able to do much. And to elaborate, you need connections. 

It can be people you know or places like thrift stores, yard sales, or Facebook Marketplace to get materials for free or reduced cost. 

Thrift stores, yard sales, and Facebook Marketplace are pretty self-explanatory. Facebook Marketplace is good for getting furniture, like in the example given earlier. 

But what about people? Now, every situation is different because you need the “connections”. However, once people know that you are looking for supplies, they like to help out and do what they can to be able to provide those supplies.

For example, my brothers are in the trades, and I’ve gotten free scrap wood that I’ve used for my coffee station barn door, farmhouse headboard, or even pallet wood for my picture frame. 

Now, these materials tie into the second aspect of creativity. So, keep the creativity concept in mind. 

But even if you don’t have family or friends in the trades, there are ways around this. 

For example, sometimes people get rid of picture frames. Picture frames are gold in my book because they can be spray-painted easily. Even if you don’t use them for pictures, you can always make a decorative sign with them. 

Or even materials that stores may get rid of. For example, a local grocery store gets their products in bulk. They have these large pickle buckets that they get rid of.

I used to work at this grocery store, so I have an in, but other customers also asked for the buckets back when I worked for them. So, by using creativity and connections, I got free planting containers for my fig tree and vine plants! 

But like I said before, once people know that you like to do DIY projects, more often than not, they offer the supplies they come across, which ties into my next point.

Space

This might be a challenge for some, depending on your living circumstances. So, this is where you’ll have to get picky with what you take and hold onto if that’s the case. Regardless, you need space to hold onto things.

For example, my husband works with masonry supplies and, from time to time, will get free or discounted tile or stone because it was either promotional or leftover. 

Whether it’s just 10 pieces of orange tile or a pallet’s worth of stone paneling, I need to make space to hold onto them. This saves me money because it’s one less cost down the road. 

Time

All other tips considered, you need time on your side. To fully take advantage of time, you have to be good at planning. 

Planning is crucial when using time wisely because it allows you to get the materials before you need them. This also saves you space because if you can plan and know what you need to get the job done, then you can acquire the necessary materials and not have to worry about keeping everything and anything. 

So, to give an example, I plan on building my home. I have a layout and design already in mind. 

Because I’m naturally a planner, this comes as second nature. But essentially, I follow the steps listed in this blog post to save money in the future. 

I am trying to make this build budget-friendly without sacrificing style. So, for example, the master bathroom vanity could cost a pretty penny (problem). So the question becomes what can I use to create a bathroom vanity at a fraction of the cost?

Well, what about a dresser? (not looking at materials for face value). 

So, this means I need the connections on getting a dresser at a fraction of the cost, if not free. To accomplish this, I’m waiting for a dresser to appear on Facebook Marketplace with the correct dimensions and structure for a reasonable price. 

Then, once I DIY the dresser, I’ll need a space to put it until I can use it for its intended purpose. All of this would not be possible if I did not have time on my side.

So, in essence, the planning part of time is key. And if it works out, I could save a thousand or more because I had the forethought and time to do it.

Importance of Upgrading your Decorative Ladder

The reason your decorative ladder is feeling cluttered is quite simple. As you can see in my decorative ladder, before upgrading it, it just felt overwhelming. 

It took me a while to decorate this because the decorations felt crowded even though there was enough space between everything. 

The Simple Secret to Upgrading your Decorative Ladder

So what is it then? Well, it’s the “big picture”. And what I mean by that is even though I don’t have an overwhelming amount of decorations on the decorative ladder, the visual appeal, as a whole, seems a bit much. 

So I had two options. Reduce the amount of décor or change something on the ladder.

As you can see, I went with the latter (see what I did there, lol!) and decided to upgrade the ladder and the display shelves. 

Now, in case you are wondering what the final decorated ladder looks like, you can check out my final post here! I’m not gonna lie, it came out so good!

So the question is, why does it look less cluttered? Because I removed one of the factors in the equation. The excess textures, in other words, the grain on the ladder. 

The ladder has a beautiful grain to it. However, this grain is visually overstimulating because there’s a lot of it. This overstimulation is driving the cluttered feeling.

It’s no different than decorating your home. Have you ever noticed decorating a room with excess features like textured walls, contrasting wood grain on the mantle, or even an intricate carpet pattern is more challenging compared to a simple room?

The same concept applies here too. There is too much fluctuation in the grain and the shelf coloring.

So, to make this easy for you, below are helpful tips and tricks to upgrade your décor ladder in a few simple steps.

Size of the Boards

So, first and foremost, do yourself a favor and don’t make the shelves too long. Before I ended up with these scrap pieces of shiplap I was using much longer boards.

They were far too large! As a result, I kept adding décor to fill the void, which only added to the busyness.

So, to make it easy for you, I wouldn’t have the display shelves any longer than the ladder height.

Now, there are some exceptions to this rule. But overall, if you’re striving for a similar look to mine, then apply this rule. My shelves are a few inches shorter than the ladder height, and I think it’s the perfect length.

I also got these shiplap boards for FREE! Thanks to my brother who is in the trades and comes across materials that are perfect for frugal DIYers like myself. I discuss more of how to get materials for free in the article above.

Stain the Top Shelf

I wanted there to be some original ladder showing. It doesn’t do me any good to paint the whole thing white when the point of getting a painter’s ladder was to showcase the painter’s ladder.

So, that meant one of the shelves needed some stain to match the color of the ladder. 

I go into more detail on color theory and how to use the knowledge and apply it to matching stains/paints in the article below. But for now, I’ll explain a high-level overview of how I did it for this project.

First, I took special walnut stain and diluted it with mineral spirits. If you do this, I highly recommend using a stain that you have used in the past. This way, you already have an idea of what to expect from the color.

Start on the safe side like underneath the shelf or on a scrap piece of the same type of wood. Use more mineral spirits to dilute the color of the stain. 

After the initial test, I gradually added more stain until the color came close. You can even add a different color stain to the mixture. Just be sure not to mix oil-based stains with water-based stains. I added briarsmoke to get the perfect grayish undertones.

Paint the Bottom of the Ladder

So, the last part of this upgrade is to paint the bottom section of the ladder. This was the big leap between the ladder décor looking far too extreme with the wood grain to what it is now.

And again, the point of painting it was to remove the equation of the overstimulation from the grain of the ladder.

A helpful tip to keep in mind is to use good masking tape.

Also, when you are looking to apply the masking tape, it’s easiest to get a long level measuring tool, or in my case, a makeshift one with a long straight edge and painter’s tape!

One of the downsides to having our house structured the way it is, is the window right off of our porch is looking into our bedroom.

Platforms like Pinterest offer a wealth of inspiration, showcasing stunning homes and interiors. Save images or create boards of designs, colors, materials, and layouts that catch your eye. This will help you gather a visual collection of elements you love and provide a reference point for your architect or designer.

Don’t limit your research to just images and visuals. Dive deeper into articles and blog posts that discuss different architectural styles, energy-efficient features, and innovative design solutions. 

Understanding the benefits and challenges of certain design choices will enable you to make more informed decisions and communicate effectively with your architect or designer.

For example, my brother, who works in the trades industry, said that one of the homes he was working on had an issue with one of the kitchen appliances. 

Ultimately it was a breakdown in communication, and the issue at hand was the space in the kitchen didn’t account for the dimensions of this particular kitchen appliance. If my memory is correct, I think it was the refrigerator. 

The homeowner had to adjust, but had the dimensions of this particular appliance been thought of and discussed ahead of time, it wouldn’t have been an issue. 

Discussions with Professionals in the Field

I am fortunate to have a plethora of family in the trades. Whether it’s construction, electrical, plumbing, etc., having these connections has helped and continues to help during the designing stages. 

Because don’t forget, they see a lot of homes or helped build them. So, if you have any close family or friends in a specific field that applies to building a home, definitely utilize that resource.

Katie T’s Farmhouse Home Fun Fact #3

Before I jump into this DIY wooden sign project tutorial, I want to mention a fun fact about myself! This is a new section I’m including on my blog posts so my readers can get to know me on a personal level! So far, this is the third one I’ve done, so I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below!

So, for my third fun fact, I want to share that I live in the New England area! 

Contrary to other people in this area, I actually love the winter! I love the snow and how pretty it looks on the trees. I also look forward to the colder weather so I can go ice skating on a pond near my parent’s house! 

Choosing the Right Materials

Before we dive into designing your wooden sign, let’s first talk about the importance of choosing the right materials. Just as a chef selects the finest ingredients to create a mouthwatering dish, you too should carefully consider the wood and tools you’ll use to bring your vision to life.

When selecting the wood for your sign, there are a few factors to keep in mind. First, consider the desired aesthetic of the sign. Do you want a frame around the edges of the sign, similar to my project? If so, you’ll need to find a thin sheet of plywood.

Because the frame can only hold so much weight, you’ll want to find the thinnest sheet of plywood possible. I found this 6×6′ sheet at Home Depot. 

Once you’ve selected the perfect wood and frame, it’s time to consider the tools you’ll need for the job. To start, you’ll need a circular saw to cut the sheet of plywood to your desired dimension. 

Note: below I have details to make this step super simple, so be sure to check out the last section. 

Depending on your design, you may also require custom vinyl, a router for creating intricate details, or even a woodburning tool.

Because I have a Cricut, (more info on what a Cricut is here), I went with the custom vinyl route. This machine allowed me to design and cut out the barn and text for the custom wooden sign. 

You’ll also need stain or spray paint, which I go into more detail on my methods below. 

Designing Your Wooden Sign

Before diving into the design process, take a moment to consider the purpose and theme of your sign. What message do you want it to convey? Is there a specific style or aesthetic you’re aiming for? 

When it comes to designing your wooden sign, simplicity often wins. Think about using clean lines, easy-to-read fonts, and a logical layout. Remember, your primary goal is to communicate the message clearly and effectively. Fancy and intricate designs might look appealing, but they could also make your sign harder to read from a distance.

I made this sign for my father-in-law as a Christmas gift. He plans on building a barn, so it felt fitting to give him a Christmas gift that reflects his upcoming project.

First, I started with the frame. I wasn’t in love with the glossy finish, so I spray-painted it with black matte spray paint.

Then, after I cut the plywood to fit the frame, I stained it. I had a vision in mind for what I wanted the wooden sign to look like. The stain color was one of the aspects I was particular about.

I wanted orange undertones without it being that ugly orange stain. You know, the stain that a lot of old furniture pieces have. So, I decided to experiment.

I mixed light walnut stain, walnut gel stain, and mineral spirits to thin it out. The consistency was, unsurprisingly clumpy from the gel stain, but I was okay with that. I didn’t mind variations in the undertone. In fact, I was hoping for a slight variation.

After mixing the stain and testing it on a separate scrap piece of wood, I finally achieved the desired shade and stained the sheet of plywood.

If you plan on following these steps, a couple of things to note. First, don’t be afraid to experiment. I have more information on color theory and how to use this knowledge to influence your stain here. Also, I have more information on gel stain here.

Adding Personalized Details

Adding personalized details to your wooden sign allows you to put your stamp on the finished product. Whether you’re creating a sign for your workshop or as a gift for someone else, these personal touches will make it truly special. 

One way to personalize your wooden sign is by incorporating your handwriting or lettering. You can use stencils or trace letters onto your sign and then paint or carve them. 

This adds a beautiful and unique touch that showcases your style. If you don’t feel confident in your handwriting skills, you can use custom stencils or decals to add personalized text or designs.

Another option for adding personalized details is to include meaningful symbols or words that hold significance to you or the workshop. It could be a logo, a favorite quote, or a reference to heritage (like what I did by saying “Italian workshop”).

By putting thought into the personalized details of your wooden sign, you’re ensuring that it becomes a meaningful piece that represents you or the person you are making it for. 

These elements will make it stand out from generic signs and show the care and attention to detail that went into its creation. 

Tips for Professional Results

Now that you know how to create a custom DIY wooden sign for the workshop, it’s time to review a few tips and tricks.

1. Hanging the wooden sign. Before you jump into creating your sign, make sure you have a plan for attaching the proper wire to hang it. Because the sheet of plywood is so thin, I didn’t want to risk screwing a hole into it, so I took a thicker scrap piece of wood and used wood glue to adhere it to the back. From there, I attached the wire hanging kit as instructed. 

2. Cutting the plywood to dimension: If you’re prepared and want to make life easier on yourself, bring the exact dimensions to Home Depot, and they can cut the board for you. I had them cut it so it would fit in my car, but I didn’t have the exact dimensions. This resulted in having to cut it when I got home. Make life easier on yourself, and be prepared! 

3. Vinyl decal tips. If you add vinyl decals like I did (whether you cut it yourself or purchase custom ones from Etsy), make sure the surface is flat. If there are any indents in the wood, the vinyl will not adhere properly.

4. Have fun with the project!

Understanding the Importance of a Food-Safe Wood Finish

To create a natural wood sealer that is safe for contact with food, it is crucial to understand a few things. 

While traditional wood finishes may provide some level of protection, they often contain harmful chemicals that can leach into food or pose health risks to you and your loved ones. 

This is where a food-safe wood finish comes in, offering a solution that prioritizes the safety and well-being of your family. While sealing your wooden project properly.

This sealer should be used on items like cutting boards, countertops, utensils, or any wooden item that comes in direct contact with food. 

For example, I made this charcuterie board with food-safe stain and marble vinyl. I wanted to add a protective layer to it, but wanted it to be food-safe. This is what inspired me to write this post for you guys! 

Choosing the Right Ingredients for Your Natural Wood Sealer

Creating a food safe wood finish also aligns with the growing trend towards sustainability and eco-friendliness. By opting for a natural and non-toxic, handmade wood finish, you are making a conscious choice to reduce your environmental footprint and become more self-sufficient. 

In this world of consumerism and convenience, self-sufficiency is becoming a dying art. So, if there is an area where I can combat this downward trend, I will. 

So, to create a natural wood sealer that is both effective and safe, it is crucial to choose the right ingredients. The ingredients you select will determine the quality and longevity of your wood finish, as well as its ability to provide adequate protection.

When selecting the ingredients for your natural wood sealer, there are several key factors to consider. First and foremost, you want to ensure that the ingredients you choose are food-safe and non-toxic. 

This means avoiding any chemicals or additives that may pose a health risk. Look for ingredients that are natural and derived from sustainable sources, such as plant-based oils and waxes.

Another important consideration is the specific properties of the ingredients. Different oils and waxes offer different levels of protection and enhance the natural beauty of wood in different ways. 

For example, tung oil is known for its excellent water resistance, while linseed oil enhances the richness of the wood grain. Be sure to research the properties of each ingredient and choose ones that align with your desired outcome for the wood sealer.

For the wood finish I made, I chose organic beeswax pellets and butcherblock oil. These two ingredients were used for a couple of reasons.

First and foremost, it’s what I had on hand. If you’re new to this blog, I’m all about being resourceful and using what I already have to achieve a desired outcome.

And I just so happen to have these two ingredients so it seemed perfect.

The second reason (and why I had this on hand) is because of the antibacterial properties of beeswax. I’m a big advocate of beeswax in everyday items whether it’s a homemade candle, beeswax wrap, or perhaps in beauty products. 

Lastly, the butcherblock oil is designed to be made for cutting boards (a.k.a butcher block). So the oil is not only food safe, but it’s also a better oil to use in this type of application because it doesn’t go rancid as quickly compared to other oils.

Step-by-Step Guide: Making Your Food-Grade Wood Finish

Once you have carefully selected your ingredients, it’s time to follow this easy step-by-step process to create your food-grade wood finish. 

If you are choosing the same ingredients as I did, all you need to do is melt the beeswax and mix it with the butcher block oil.

I used a double broiler method to melt the beeswax (I go into more detail on how to clean the pans in the bonus section below). The thought process here was using a slower method to avoid overheating.

So once I melted about a 1/2 cup of beeswax pellets I added 3/4 of a 12 fl oz bottle of butcher block oil. I then transferred the mixture into a glass container and let it sit while stirring occasionally until it hardened to a gel-like substance.

Testing and Applying Your Homemade Wood Sealer

Once the sealant has completely hardened, you can apply it to your wooden project using a clean cloth or paper towel. 

After completely applying the sealer, let it dry overnight. Then remove any access the following day with a dry paper towel. 

For added layers of protection, you can repeat this process and apply multiple coats. I, however, only did one as this charcuterie board is one of many so it probably won’t be used daily. 

Bonus Tip: How to Wash Wood with this Sealer

Now that you have successfully applied your homemade sealer, you’re in for a treat with this bonus tip on how to wash your brand-new wood project!

This is a hand-wash-only type of sealer, but that is nothing special as all of my wooden kitchen serveware is handwash only. 

The important part, however, is not to let the water sit for a long time on the wooden surface.

And what I mean by that is, when you wash it, the water will naturally bead up (which is how you’ll know that the sealer is doing its job). However, I tend to let the dishes air dry vs. drying them off right away with a towel.

And because there were residual beads of water on the charcuterie board, they did soak in with time and slightly stain the wood. 

Not enough where it’s super noticeable, but enough to be annoying, so learn from my mistakes!!

Also, when cleaning the double broiler or pots, don’t add water to it. At least, not until the pot has completely dried and you can chip off any residual beeswax. Trust me on this one, it is SO much easier to do it this way!

To truly master the art of wood stain color matching, it’s essential to have a firm grasp of color theory. By understanding how different colors interact and influence one another, you can create harmonious blends that breathe life into your woodworking projects. 

So, to elaborate, I used the knowledge of color theory to match the color of my nightstands to the color of my bed frame. Keep in mind, that I used completely separate paints and stains for both of them. For the bed frame, I mixed walnut gel stain with yellow acrylic paint. And I added briarsmoke to a preexisting coat of aged wood accelerator on the nightstands.

At its core, color theory explores the relationships between colors on the color wheel. This invaluable tool categorizes colors into primary (red, blue, and yellow), secondary (created by mixing primary colors), and tertiary (mixtures of primary and secondary colors) hues. By familiarizing yourself with this basic framework, you can begin to understand how hues combine and interact to create unique shades.

One of the fundamental concepts in color theory is the idea of complementary colors. These colors sit opposite each other on the color wheel and create a striking contrast when paired together. For example, red and green or blue and orange are complementary pairs. 

Understanding how complementary colors affect wood stain color is key. This is because when complementary colors mix, they create a shade of brown. 

This is why kids who mix lots of paints or dyes for their craft projects end up with a brown color. For example, they mixed red, yellow, and blue. Yellow and blue mix together and create green, the complementary color of red. So when those two mix, they form brown. 

Another key aspect to consider is the ratio of the colors. So, building off of the example above, if the kid mixed equal parts red, yellow, and blue (the primary colors), then the outcome wouldn’t be brown but rather black. This is a lot harder to do, but when considering shades for staining, you must keep this in mind.

Choosing the Right Stains

So, what do complementary colors have to do with blending stains to match a preexisting color? Everything. Because odds are, unless you know the exact color used on the preexisting furniture, you’ll have to mix some stain to get it close.

The complementary colors come into play because this knowledge will help you determine what colors to mix. Take, for example, this DIY coffee station project I did earlier this year. 

I used gel stain on the top of the furniture piece and did not care for the purple undertones. Now, the complementary color of purple is yellow, so I decided to experiment and mix yellow acrylic paint with the stain. 

Did I get the desired color? Yes! The yellow offset the purple undertones because it was the complementary color. Now, I would not mix acrylic paint with regular stain. The only reason I decided to experiment with the gel stain is because of the nature of how gel stain works. You can find more information here on the benefits of gel stain over traditional stain and how to use it.

But this concept still applies. Let’s say you found a stain close to a preexisting color, but the purple undertone is slightly too strong (shown in the example above when I mixed white with the brown stain). If you mix a stain with yellow undertones, it will balance out the purple (the brown to the right of the purplish undertoned brown).

You may also need to experiment with shades and how much of each ratio, but that varies depending on your unique circumstances. So in the example of the nightstands above, this was the original color:

After I DIYed my farmhouse bed frame, I decided I wanted my nightstands to match. After having experience with the briarsmoke stain and knowing it has a gray-purplish tint, I decided to test it out and it couldn’t be more spot on!

Blending Stain Colors

Immersing ourselves in the principles of color theory opens up a vast array of possibilities in wood stain color matching. With this knowledge, we gain the confidence to select the perfect stains that not only complement each other but also bring out the best in the wood. 

Blending stain colors allows us to create unique and custom shades that perfectly suit our preferences and the project at hand. Whether we want to achieve a warm, honey-like tone or a rich, mahogany hue, blending stain colors gives us the freedom to experiment and create our desired look. 

To begin the process of blending stain colors, we can start by selecting a primary stain color as our base. This color will serve as the foundation for our blend. From there, we can add small amounts of other stain colors to the base, testing the mixture on a piece of scrap wood to determine the desired outcome. 

Just note that the type of scrap wood will influence the shade. So you can always test directly on the furniture as I did for this project and sand it off after. Or you can apply the stain in a hidden area, like the bottom of the furniture. 

I also want to point out that the types of stains will determine the stains you can mix with. You should only mix oil-based stains with other oil-based stains. The same rule applies to water-based stains as well. 

The key to successful blending is to start with small increments and gradually build up the intensity of the added colors. This gradual approach allows for greater control and precision in achieving the desired shade. Remember, it’s always easier to add more color than to remove it, so take your time and experiment until you find the perfect blend.

Applying Stains Like a Pro

Once you achieve the desired stain color, you can apply the blended stain to your project. 

1. Prepare the Wood Surface: Before applying any stain, it’s crucial to prepare the wood surface properly. Start by sanding the wood to remove any imperfections or previous finishes. This will help the stain adhere evenly and create a uniform look. Ensure that the wood is clean and free from dust or debris, as these can affect the final result.

2. Use the Right Tools: To achieve a professional-looking finish, it’s essential to use the right tools for applying the stain. Consider using a high-quality brush, foam applicator, or cloth, depending on the type of stain and desired finish.

3. Apply in the Right Conditions: The environment in which you apply the stain can significantly impact the final result. Ideally, choose a well-ventilated area with moderate temperature and low humidity. Avoid applying the stain in direct sunlight or extreme weather conditions, as these can affect how the stain dries and adheres to the wood.

4. Follow the Directions: Different stains may have specific instructions or recommended application techniques. Read the manufacturer’s guidelines carefully before starting and follow them accordingly. Some stains may require multiple coats, while others might need to be wiped off within a certain timeframe. By following the instructions, you can achieve the best outcomes with your blended stain.

DIY Desk Refurbished 

As I said before, I’ve had this desk for a while. I got it free from Facebook Marketplace and knew it would need some TLC. I finally found time to tackle this project, and am sharing what I did for those looking to refurbish their home office desk. 

Evaluate the Situation

Okay, so one of the first things I did was take apart the whole desk. I didn’t completely take apart the top, because I knew I wouldn’t be using it, at least not for what it was built for.

So, I scraped the top piece for parts to add to the base of the desk. For example, the desk was missing some trim, and there was an open space between the drawer and the cabinet below.

So, I took pieces, like trim from the top part of the desk, cut them to size, and attached them to where I felt necessary. 

I always like to use what I have on hand to complete a project. But, I understand this might not apply to you because your desk is probably different. If that’s the case, get creative! Perhaps you can find free furniture for designated scrap wood to use on other projects!

Sand the Desk

So my desk is made of particle board with a laminate covering. I still sanded the desk lightly, just so the paint would adhere better. If you also have a laminate desk, don’t go overboard on the sanding, as this will destroy the laminate finish. You want to sand just enough so the paint has something to adhere to.

Paint the Office Desk

Okay, so here is where I skipped a step, and I highly recommend that you don’t. And what I mean is I never put down a primer. Now, having had my desk completed and moved back into the office, it did chip slightly during the moving process. I wish I had put primer down as a base layer so the paint would have adhered better, but unfortunately, I skipped that step.

So don’t make the same mistake! Take the time and put the primer down first, and then paint the desk with the color of your choice!

As I said earlier, I’m a huge fan of using what I have to tackle a project. I had white matte outdoor paint that hadn’t been unused for a long time. I also had a water-based stain left over from a different project. 

So, I mixed the two! Yes, I mixed paint and stain together, and I have to be honest, I’m in love with the color. If you decide to do this step, just make sure that the paint and stain are the same base, whether it’s water or oil. 

I also used a paint roller and sponge to paint the desk. I feel like I get a much smoother layer with a paint roller vs. a brush. 

Final Coating on the Desk

After 3 layers of paint, I added the final coating of polycrylic to give it a finishing protective coat. Again, I painted this with a paint roller so I wouldn’t have brush strokes. 

Spray Paint the Hardware

So I bought these gorgeous drawer handles (I’m seriously so happy with how they match the desk), and I wanted the metal hardware like the drawer slides to match the handles. So I spray-painted them gold, to give it a matching color. 

Assemble the Desk 

After everything is painted and has dried, you can assemble it! And voila, there you have it! A new and improved desk for your home office!
